Heffner played on the football team from 1957-60, while earning five varsity letters during that time with four coming in football and one in track and field. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Heffner graduated from Lincoln University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education in 1962.
He was named co-captain of the football team his senior year and was the rushing and touchdown leader all four years, compiling 3,500 yards and 35 touchdowns.
He is second only to the great Leo Lewis in total career rushing yards. Heffner was an all-conference selection as a junior and senior and was also named to the Associated Press second team “Little All American” his senior year and by the Pittsburg Courier “Little All American” both junior and senior years.
Heffner was selected by LU to appear in the 1959-60 edition of “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges,” and after graduation, he served in the U.S. Army for 30 years retiring at the rank of Colonel. During his military career, he received recognitions such as Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation, Vietnam Service Medal (11 Service Stars), Parachutist Badge, and Combat Infantryman Badge.
