A three-time all-conference selection, Herman O'Neil was one of the co-captains of the 1958 Lincoln football team. O'Neil, who played for Lincoln from 1956-59, earned HBCU All-American honors from the Pittsburg Courier in 1958 after helping Lincoln to a 7-1 record and a win over Emporia State in the Mineral Water Bowl. A stalwart guard on an offensive line that helped Lincoln score 242 points, O'Neil was also awarded the Harry Stokes Outstanding Football Player Award that season.

O'Neil was selected All-MWAA first team following his sophomore, junior and senior seasons and was a four-year starter for the Blue Tigers, helping Lincoln win 27 games in the process. Following his Lincoln career, O'Neil served as a high school coach in the Memphis, Tennessee area for many years, helping to develop numerous NCAA Division I football players, including Claude Humphrey, a six-time Pro Bowl player for the Atlanta Falcons.
