The 1972 football team went 9-1 and ended up tying for the MIAA Championship. Their winning season is the last in the programs history and now currently has four members of the LU Hall of Fame from that team including Archie Brown, Larry Terry, Head Coach Dwight T. Reed, and Assistant Coach Leo Lewis.
The year 1972 also marked the first year of the new stadium, that later became named after Dwight T. Reed in 1985, in which the Blue Tigers took advantage of their home field throughout the season.
Lincoln won several, tightly-contested games, including the season opener against arch-rival Langston, as LU came away with the 15-6 victory. The games to follow weren’t much easier, but over the next four contests, Lincoln came away with victories against Arkansas Tech (10-3), Kentucky State (32-19), Alcorn A&M (20-14) and Northwest Missouri State (12-10).
The Blue Tigers suffered their only setback the game after Northwest Missouri State, falling against Southeast Missouri State, 38-8. The team quickly rebounded with a tight wins over Central Missouri, 14-7 and Northeast Missouri State, 10-6.
Lincoln closed the season in style, having played close games throughout, they won easily in their final two games against Southwest Missouri (52-7) and Missouri-Rolla (40-0). They are also the only class in school history to reach nine victories in a season.
