Herman Gant, Jr., graduated from Lincoln University with a Bachelor of Science in 1963. While at Lincoln he set many records in track. In 1957 Gant ran the mile in a time of 4:23 and at the LU conference meet, he posted a time of 1:58 in the half-mile. In 1958 he set the school record in the half-mile with a time of 1:57 which broke the record that had been set by a teammate the previous week. At the conference meet, Gant broke the 4:23 mark for the mile with a time of 4:21 and in 1959 he shattered his own mile record by clocking a time of 4:20. During his time as a student, Gant also coached the cross country team in 1960.
