Dwight T. Reed came to Lincoln in 1949 and would stay until 1980 holding the position of Head Football Coach from 1949 to 1972, accruing a career record of 135-75-6. His teams enjoyed success in both 1952 and 1953, as both squads went undefeated. Reed tallied three Midwestern Athletic Association Championships, and one Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association title. Football wasn’t the only sport he took on during that time, as Reed was the Men’s Track Coach from 1949-1993 and the Women’s Track Coach from 1985-1993. Men’s basketball also was in line for Reed from 1955-1958, as he coached the team to a 48-21 record. In all, he coached 93 All-Americans in four sports and also spent time as Athletic Director from 1957-1980. He passed away in 2000 and the football stadium still bears his name to this day.
