JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Lincoln football team is back on the road this weekend to play Texas-Permian Basin in Midland, Texas at Grande Stadium in an exhibition game on Saturday (March 6) at 1:00 p.m. CST.
It's the second exhibition of the spring season for the Blue Tigers, who
opened the 2021 season against Nicholls State on Feb. 19. Returner
Desmond Hunter and newcomer
Josh Cartwright split time under center, and
Tori Hicks led the offense with 4.4 yards per carry and 137 yards of total offense.
Chrisshun Robinson,
LaCalvin Wilson,
CJ Closser and
Charles Johnson were LU's top receivers.
On defense,
Elliot Albert led the Blue Tigers with 10 tackles and
Zyan Thomas-King had eight while
TeAndre Skinner was responsible for six, including one for a loss.
Charles Robertson,
Jaylon Mosley,
Cody Bagby and
Daniel Wheeler each had five takedowns, and
Clayton Winkler had four.
Javier Moreno made a 32-yard field goal in the opener and averaged 45.5 yards on kickoffs.
There are several other LU players to keep an eye on, including
Hosea Franklin, an All-American honorable mention in 2019 after leading the MIAA with 1,359 rushing yards and 123.6 yards per game.
Dre'Shon Alston led Lincoln's receiving corps with 13 grabs for 119 yards, and Closser averaged 17.0 yards per catch before having his 2019 season cut short due to injury.
Vontavious Thacker supplied 62 tackles, including four for loss and a sack, and
Quan Mason had five tackles for loss and three quarterback hurries.
UT-Permian Basin opened its spring exhibition slate on Feb. 27 with a 33-14 win over Southern Nazarene. Clayton Roberts threw for 171 yards and four touchdowns, and led the Falcon rushing attack with 101 yards on 12 carries. MJ Link was the top receiver, catching four passes for 92 yards and two scores. Miquon Mayes had a team-high 12 tackles, followed by Kadarryus Hartfield with nine and Justen Campbell and Donta Stuart each with eight. D'Ondre Robinson intercepted two passes and finished with six takedowns.
Following Saturday's game, Lincoln has one more exhibition contest remaining on its spring schedule, as LU will play East Central in Ada, Okla. on April 10.
