THE KICKOFF
The Lincoln football team prepares for its second road contest of the season this weekend, as the Blue Tigers visit Tahlequah, Okla. to play Northeastern State on Saturday (Sept. 24) at 2:00 p.m. CDT.
Both teams enter the weekend playing for their first victories of 2022. Last Saturday (Sept. 17), Lincoln scored early against Fort Hays State and led after the first quarter, but FHSU rallied for a 51-14 win. Northeastern State, meanwhile, is coming off a 49-14 road loss to Pittsburg State.
The Blue Tigers had won two-straight in this series before Northeastern State clipped Lincoln in overtime in 2021. Prior to that, the Blue Tigers had defeated the RiverHawks at home in both 2013 (44-33) and 2019 (27-9).
QUICK HITS
- This is a relatively new series, with the first meeting taking place in 2012. Northeastern State won that game, the only one thus far played in Tahlequah. The teams have met four times overall, with the last three games each taking place in Jefferson City, and the series is tied, 2-2.
- The Blue Tigers won the second and third meetings in this series, but Northeastern State ended up winning the 2021 match-up in overtime, 49-48. A victory on Saturday would be the first for LU on the road against NSU.
- At an estimated five hours of drive time, this is the longest road trip on Lincoln's 2022 football schedule.
- A victory would be the first for Lincoln in the month of September since 2018, when the Blue Tigers won in their final home game of the month, 28-13, against Southwest Baptist..
- Lincoln is seeking its first conference road win since beating William Jewell, 23-14, as a GLVC program on Oct. 20, 2018.
- A victory for Lincoln would be its first against an MIAA opponent since beating Northeastern State at home in 2019, and its first road win over an MIAA program since defeating Central Missouri, 20-7, in 1975.
- The Blue Tigers enter this weekend with an all-time record of 261-477-25.
-
Jermaine Gales was named the head coach of the Blue Tigers in the fall of 2021, and is in his first season leading the Blue Tigers. He enters the week with an overall and LU record of 0-3.
- Lincoln is in its third-consecutive year, and its 26th overall as a football-playing member of the MIAA. The Blue Tigers, who were an associate member of the GLVC from 2014-18, previously played in the MIAA from 1970-89 and again from 2011-13. The MIAA is the fifth different conference in which the Blue Tigers have been a member, joining the Midwest Athletic Association, the Great Lakes Football Conference, the Central States Football League and the GLVC.
- This is the 91st season of Lincoln football. The Blue Tigers first fielded a team in 1920 and played every year until 1943, when Lincoln took a year off due to World War II. LU then played each season from 1944-1989. The football program was disbanded at that point, but was brought back in 2000.
