THE TIP OFF:Â The Lincoln women's basketball team is off to Florida for a pair of Thanksgiving-week games vs. non-conference opponents. LU will be in Boca Raton, Fla. on Monday (Nov. 21) to play Lynn at 2:00 p.m. CST. On Tuesday, the Blue Tigers travel to Lakeland, Fla. for a 5:30 p.m. CST contest against Florida Southern. Lincoln is 1-1 on the season after getting a split at the Central Region Challenge. Lynn, meanwhile, is 2-0 while Florida Southern is 1-1.
FAST BREAKS
- On Monday, Lynn and Lincoln will meet for the first time ever.
- Likewise, on Tuesday, the Blue Tigers will play their first-ever game against Florida Southern.
- In fact, the two games this week are the first for Lincoln inside the Sunshine State since Lincoln became an NCAA Division II program in 1981-82.
- The Blue Tigers played a pair of neutral site games to open the 2022-23 season and are playing two road games this week before opening MIAA play at Pittsburg State. Lincoln's first home game will be its sixth contest of the year, as the Blue Tigers host Newman on Dec. 1. This is the first season since the 1984-85 campaign that Lincoln will not play at home until its sixth game of the season. LU was 2-3 in those first five games of 1984-85.
PREVIEWING THE BLUE TIGERS:Â Lincoln is led by Le'Yanna McGinnis, who averaged 24.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in LU's first two games of the season. Also averaging double digit points for LU is Kelsey Mitchell with 11.5 per contest, followed by AJ Bradley with 9.5 per game. Niyah Jackson has dished a team-high seven assists.
HEAD COACH ANDREA MIZE:Â Andrea Mize is in her third year as the head coach at Lincoln after a successful two-year run at Central Florida College. In 2019-20, Mize led CFC to a 19-win year that included a victory in the first round of the FCSAA playoffs. Mize previously was an assistant at Martin Methodist, helping the program reach the NAIA national tournament three times.
LAST TIME OUT
Lincoln 67, Arkansas-Monticello 64
The Blue Tigers scored 40 points in the second half to rally from a five-point halftime deficit to win their first game of 2022-23, 67-64, over Arkansas-Monticello in the Central Region Challenge on Friday, Nov. 11. Le'Yanna McGinnis finished with 24 points and seven rebounds while five other LU players each scored eight points.
Southern Arkansas 100, Lincoln 89
Lincoln led by five at the end of the first quarter, but Southern Arkansas won a high-scoring game on Saturday, Nov. 12 by a final of 100-89. Le'Yanna McGinnis had 25 points and seven rebounds to lead the Blue Tigers, and Kelsey Mitchell finished with 15 points, four boards and two steals while AJ Bradley scored 18 & Ayreona Carter had 12 points.
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING KNIGHTS:Â Lynn is averaging 84.0 points per game while allowing 63.0, and are shooting an impressive .608 from the field. The top-two scorers for the Fighting Knights are Jada Marone (20.0 ppg.) and Ella Fiore (13.0), and Lucija Kostic is the leading rebounder with 6.0 per night. Kostic also has team-highs in assists (eight), steals (three) and blocks (two), and Rachel Romich averages 8.5 points.
LC HEAD COACH JULIA TUCKER:Â In seven seasons at Lynn, Tucker has directed the Fighting Knights to 67 victories, including a 16-win year in 2018-19. Tucker has served on the staffs at three Division I universities: Furman, Austin Peay and Virginia Commonwealth. Her top assistant coach is DJ Slifer, son of current Central Missouri coach Dave Slifer.
SCOUTING THE MOCS:Â Through two games, Florida Southern had scored 77 points and had allowed 77 points while shooting .487 from the field. Three Mocs average double digit points: Ashley Shell (22.0 ppg., 7.5 rpg.), Arielle Dabu (12.5 ppg.) and Domenica Zamora (13.0 ppg.). Zamora additionally leads the team in assists with 11 and steals with five.
FSC HEAD COACH MEGAN DZIKAS:Â An alumna of Florida Southern, Dzikas is the interim head coach of the Mocs this season. She returned to her alma mater in 2019 as an assistant coach, and she was an All-Sunshine State Conference selection as a player. Dzikas also spent one season as the head coach at St. Catharine, leading the team to a 14-11 record in 2015-16.
BRILLIANT McGINNIS:Â Le'Yanna McGinnis has been on fire through the first two games of 2022-23, averaging 24.5 points and 7.5 rebounds while shooting .760 from the floor. McGinnis' scoring average leads the MIAA and is the 10th-best in NCAA Division II, while her rebounding total is rates 12th in the league. Her shooting percentage, meanwhile, leads the MIAA and is the 17th-best in Division II.
FROM DOWNTOWN:Â Kelsey Mitchell is among the MIAA's best three-point shooters, hitting on a .357 clip from downtown. Mitchell, who is 13th in the league in three-point percentage, is making 2.5 treys per game, the seventh-most by an MIAA player. Mitchell additionally ranks 12th in the conference in three-pointers made (five) and 14th in three-pointers attempted (14).
HOME FOR DECEMBER:Â Lincoln opened the year with a pair of neutral site games and is heading to Florida for two more non-conference contests, before concluding the month of November with its league-opener at Pittsburg State. December is a different story, however, as the Blue Tigers will play five of their six games in that month in Jason Gym. LU begins a three-game homestand on Dec. 1 against Newman, and closes the month with games vs. Stephens and Nebraska Kearney.
THEY'RE FREE:Â Miriam Bazylewicz and Saniya Simmons are among just 71 qualifying Division II players who have yet to miss a free throw in 2022-23. Le'Yanna McGinnis, who is shooting .786 at the line, has made 11 free throws, the eighth-most by an MIAA player. As a team, Lincoln is 22nd nationally with 18.0 successful free throws per game.
STAFFING:Â Hannah King joined LU as an assistant coach this spring, and Nana Sule and Makayla Watkins are the team's new graduate assistants. These additions make Lincoln one of just two teams in the MIAA to have an all-female coaching staff, with the other being Cental Oklahoma.
