Special Event - Homecoming
Series - MSSU leads, 9-2
THE KICKOFFÂ
It's Homecoming weekend at Lincoln University, and the Blue Tigers have a date with Missouri Southern at Dwight T. Reed Stadium on Saturday (Oct. 9). Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. CDT as Lincoln hosts the Lions in an MIAA contest.
This will be the third home game of the season for the Blue Tigers, who went to overtime the last time they played in Jefferson City. LU blocked a field goal to keep the game tied after regulation, and then marched down and scored a touchdown during its overtime possession. Lincoln's extra point was blocked, however, and Northeastern State ended up winning, 49-48, on Sept. 25. The Blue Tigers enter the weekend 0-4 both overall and in the MIAA.
Missouri Southern is 1-4 overall and in league play after falling at home to Pittsburg State, 20-16, on Saturday (Oct. 2). MSSU's win came on the road, as the Lions beat Central Oklahoma, 14-10.
QUICK HITSÂ
- On Saturday, Lincoln and Missouri Southern will meet for the 12th time, with MSSU holding a 9-2 advantage in the series. The Blue Tigers won the first two games in 1969 and 1970, but the Lions have since won nine-straight.
- This will be the first MIAA conference game between two teams with black head coaches since at least 1990.
- The Blue Tigers are seeking a Homecoming win for the second-straight season. In 2019, Lincoln notched a 27-9 win over Northeastern State in Lincoln's annual game during Homecoming weekend.
- This is Lincoln's third home game of the 2021 season. The Blue Tigers do not have back-to-back home games in 2021, marking the first time that has happened in an LU football season since 2005.
- A victory on Saturday would also be LU's first victory since Oct. 19, 2019, when Lincoln beat Northeastern State, 27-9.
- 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of Dwight T. Reed Stadium. The Blue Tigers first played in the venue on Sept. 25, 1971, when Lincoln beat Bemidji State, 35-13.
- The Blue Tigers enter the 2021 season with an all-time record of 261-468-25.
- Malik Hoskins was named the interim head coach of the Blue Tigers in May of 2019, and was promoted to the full-time position at the end of that year. He enters the week with an LU record of 1-14 and an overall record of 4-21.
- Lincoln is in second-consecutive year, and its 25th overall as a football-playing member of the MIAA. The Blue Tigers, who were an associate member of the GLVC from 2014-18, previously played in the MIAA from 1970-89 and from 2011-13. The MIAA is the fifth different conference in which the Blue Tigers have been a member, joining the Midwest Athletic Association, the Great Lakes Football Conference, the Central States Football League and the GLVC.
- This is the 90th season of Lincoln football. The Blue Tigers first fielded a team in 1920 and played every year until 1943, when Lincoln took a year off due to World War II. LU then played each season from 1944-1989. The football program was disbanded at that point, but was brought back in 2000.

MISSOURI SOUTHERN AT A GLANCE

THE COACHES
Malik Hoskins is in his second season as the head coach of the Lincoln football team. In his first year as the head coach, he led the team's return to the MIAA, culminating with a 27-9 win over Northeastern State on Homecoming. After the 2019 season, Hoskins was named the full-time head coach of the Blue Tigers. Hoskins also was the interim coach at Lane in 2015.
Atiba Bradley is in his first year as the head coach of his alma mater, and is the first Missouri Southern graduate who has been named head coach at MSSU. Bradley was the defensive coordinator at McKendree before taking over at Missouri Southern, and before that spent six years at NCAA Division I football programs.Â
