KANSAS CITY, Mo. -
Hosea Franklin was named to the All-MIAA first team while six other members of the Lincoln football team received all-conference honorable mention accolades, the league office announced on Tuesday (Nov. 19).
Franklin, a sophomore running back, has led the MIAA in rushing the entire season, beginning with a school record 251-yard game in the opener against Washburn. Franklin, the only league player to rush for over 1,000 yards, finished with a program single-season record 1,359 yards on 226 carries for an average of 6.0 yards per attempt. Franklin finished the year ranked in the top-10 in NCAA Division II in both total rushing yards and rushing yards per game (123.6), and his 132.5 all-purpose yards per game ranked fourth in the MIAA.
Six other LU players earned all-conference recognition, including
Cody Alexander,
JaJuan Chambers, Elex Harris, Jr.,
Quan Mason,
Michael Smith and
Cyril Spells.
Alexander, a sophomore defensive back, recovered three fumbles to lead the MIAA and rank fifth in NCAA Division II. Alexander also intercepted three passes, one of which was returned 81 yards for a touchdown in Lincoln's win over Northeastern State, and ended the season second among the Blue Tigers with 69 total tackles. Alexander additionally broke up two passes, forced a fumble and made 4.5 tackles for loss on the season.
Chambers, a defensive end, capped off his senior season with six tackles for loss and three sacks. Chambers, who was also credited with a pair of quarterback hurries, made 29 tackles on the year, 25 of which were solo.
Harris, a senior who played halfback, fullback, tight end and on the offensive line throughout the course of the season, started every game in 2019 for the Blue Tigers. His blocking helped open lanes for Franklin to set two program records and lead the MIAA while finishing in the top-10 in the nation in rushing.
Mason, a junior defensive lineman, recorded the only safety of the season by the Blue Tiger defense. Mason, who had three hurries on the year, posted five tackles for loss while matching Chambers with 29 total tackles.
Smith, a sophomore defensive end, led the Blue Tigers with 6.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. Smith made 23 total takedowns on the season and was credited with two hurries as well as a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Spells, a junior, anchored the team's offensive line as the starting center this season. In addition to providing key blocks during a record-breaking season, Spells helped Lincoln post the 48th-best rushing attack in NCAA Division II.
