Series - Missouri S&T leads, 18-11
Â
THE KICKOFFÂ The Lincoln football team closes its 2014 season on the road this Saturday (Nov. 15) when the Blue Tigers travel to Rolla, Mo. to play Missouri S&T at 1:00 p.m. CST. Both programs will be trying to snap losing streaks to end the year on a high note, with the Blue Tigers striving to pick up their first road win of the season.
Â
Lincoln has dropped its last three games and is coming off a 56-36 loss to McKendree in its home finale last Saturday (Nov. 8). The Blue Tigers have been some close games this year, with five of their losses being by nine points or less, and four of their five defeats away from home were close.
Â
Missouri S&T, meanwhile, is trying to end a four-game skid, with the Miners' last win coming on Oct. 11 against non-league Lindenwood-Belleville. Missouri S&T is coming off a 30-12 loss at home to Indianapolis, but the previous three losses were all by a touchdown or less.
Â
QUICK HITSÂ - Missouri S&T and Lincoln will meet for the 30th time in a series that dates back to 1958. The Miners lead the all-time series, 18-11. MST and LU met every year from 1970 to 1989, and resumed the series with five consecutive games starting in 2006. The teams last met in 2010, with the Blue Tigers winning 21-20 in Jefferson City.
Â
- The series against Missouri S&T is the longest against a league rival for Lincoln this season. This will be 30th time that these teams have met, surpassing the 25 contests for LU vs. Truman State. The oldest rival for Lincoln in 2014 was non-GLVC Langston, which LU has played 61 times.
Â
- A victory at Missouri S&T would give LU its first true road win since a 43-37 victory over Haskell in 2008. It would also be LU's first league road win since beating Central Missouri, 20-7, to end the 1975 season.
Â
- A win would also be the first for Lincoln away from home since beating Grambling State on a neutral field on Sept. 14, 2013.
Â
- Missouri S&T and Lincoln are each former members of both the Great Lakes Football Conference and the MIAA, making the Miners the fourth former league rival on LU's 2014 slate. Earlier this year, LU hosted Southwest Baptist and played at Truman State, two teams that are former members of the MIAA. The Blue Tigers also hosted St. Joseph's, a former GLFC rival.
Â
- The Blue Tigers enter Saturday with an all-time record of 249-423-24.
Â
- Head coach
Mike Jones is in his fourth season at Lincoln. He is 7-36 overall and at LU. Jones is the 21st head coach in the history of Blue Tiger football.
Â
- Lincoln is in its first season as a member of the GLVC. LU was in the MIAA for 23 years, including three-straight from 2011-13, for football before making the switch this year. The GLVC is the fifth different conference in which the Blue Tigers have been a member, joining the Midwest Athletic Association, the Great Lakes Football Conference, the Central States Football League and the MIAA.
Â
- This is the 84th season of Lincoln football. The Blue Tigers first fielded a team in 1920 and played every year until 1943, when Lincoln took a year off due to World War II. LU then played each season from 1944-1989. The football program was disbanded at that point, but was brought back in 2000.
Â
BLUE TIGERS TO WATCHOFFENSE - Morris Henderson's 20 touchdowns lead the GLVC and are fifth in NCAA Division II. Henderson averages 177.5 all-purpose yards per game and has rushed for 1,153 yards on 199 attempts for an average of 5.8 yards per carry.
Â
Three players have taken a snap for Lincoln, with
Owen Jordan having started the past nine games. Jordan has passed for 1,673 yards and 12 TDs and has rushed for two more scores. The back-up,
Dennis Vinson, has seen action in two games and threw a 22-yard TD pass against Texas College.
Â
Khiry Draine leads the LU receiving corps with 51 receptions for 841 yards, a new LU single-season record, and nine touchdowns.
Bryson Winfrey has 31 receptions and has thrown two touchdown passes. Some of the other playmakers on that side of the ball include
Darius Hicks, who has scored both as a receiver and a kick returner, and
Mustafa Rose, who averages 6.2 yards per carry. The o-line is led by J.J. Johnson, a USA College Football Pre-Season All-American.
Â
DEFENSE - Jeremy Rives posted a GLVC-best 21 tackles in LU's win over Quincy and leads the Blue Tigers with 80 total takedowns. Seven different players have at least five tackles for loss, led by
Davon Walls' 16 TFL and 8.5 sacks. The team tackle leaders include
Kareem Joyner with 76 and
Treston Pulley, who has made 73 with 13 tackles for loss.
Â
Robert Daniels has intercepted three passes while
Kerry Roby has picked off two, and both have scored on interception returns.
Paul Dodson, who is third on the squad with 75 tackles, has forced two fumbles, broken up three passes, made two sacks and has 6.5 tackles for loss.
Â
SPECIAL TEAMS - Julio Segura has been fantastic at creating field position swings for LU, averaging 56.3 yards on kickoffs and 38.7 yards on punts, the fifth-most in the GLVC. Segura has landed 21 of his punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line while 15 have forced returners to signal for a fair catch. Both
Morris Henderson and
Darius Hicks have scored on kick returns with Henderson accomplishing the feat twice. The kicker,
Andrew Fishel, has added 32 extra points.
Â
MISSOURI S&T AT A GLANCEÂ The Miners have rotated three players at quarterback this season, with Lamar Wilkes throwing for 906 yards and six touchdowns. Kayson Key has added 819 yards through the air and five more touchdowns while Peter Simpson has completed 29 passes for 369 yards and five scores. Wilkes and Simpson are the likely quarterbacks Lincoln will face on Saturday.
Â
Charles Bournes leads Missouri S&T's stable of running backs with 320 yards and three scores. Scott Hendricks has added 310 yards and another touchdown while Chris Kennard has gained 145 yards on the ground and Zenel Hudson has scored two rushing touchdowns. Melvin Stovall is having a strong season in the passing game, as he leads the Miners with 48 receptions, 804 yards and seven touchdowns. Leon Moody has caught five scoring passes and Nick Taylor has three touchdown receptions.
Â
One thing the Missouri S&T defense does very well is get to the quarterback, as nine players have multiple sacks on the year. Dale Davey leads the pack with 12.5 sacks and Dan Mauszycki has five. Zach Melber has recorded 15.5 tackles for loss with 4.5 sacks while Dawan Ferguson is the team leader with 62 tackles. Will Brown has picked off six passes this season and has 16 total pass defenses. Nick Kruse and Jon Vance each have two interceptions.
Â
Austin Dussold has pinned opponent inside the 20 on 20 punts while Nolan Mannino is 4-for-8 on field goals.
Â
THE COACHES Mike Jones is in his fourth season with the Blue Tigers. Jones, who led Lincoln's transition into the MIAA in his first season, now leads the Blue Tigers as they join the GLVC in 2014. A 1991 graduate of Missouri, Jones spent 12 seasons as a professional football player and is well known in Missouri for making "The Tackle" that stopped the Tennessee Titan's wide receiver Kevin Dyson on the one yard line to preserve the St. Louis Rams' victory in Super Bowl XXXIV. Before coming to Lincoln, Jones was was also the head coach at Hazelwood East High in St. Louis, leading the tean to a state title in 2008.
Â
Tyler Fenwick is in his second season as the head coach of the Miners and owns a career record of 9-12. Fenwick previously spent six seasons as the offensive coordinator at Missouri Western, leading the Griffons to an MIAA title and a berth in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals in 2012. MWSU won 53 games with Fenwick on the staff.
Â
RUNNING MAN:Â With a GLVC-best six 100-yard rushing performances,
Morris Henderson leads the conference with 1,153 yards on 199 carries. He broke the Lincoln single-game record with six TDs on the ground in LU's win against Quincy, and later rushed for 222 yards, the second-most in a game by a GLVC player this season, in Lincoln's Homecoming win over Texas College. Henderson averages 5.8 yards per carry.
Â
SCORING MACHINE:Â Morris Henderson is a threat to score anytime he touches the ball, proven by his 20 total touchdowns on the season, the fifth-most by a single player in DII. Henderson has scored as a kick returner, receiver and rusher, with six of those TDs coming in a win vs. Quincy.
Â
ALL-PURPOSE ALL-AMERICAN: One of the most electrifying players in NCAA Division II last year, senior running back
Morris Henderson was chosen to the Don Hansen All-American third team as an all-purpose player in 2013. Henderson, who has 20 total touchdowns, including two on kickoff returns, is once again one of the nation's all-purpose yardage leaders, entering this week ranked eighth in Division II and first in the GLVC with 177.5 per game.
Â
BLOCK THAT KICK:Â Few teams have been able to score on Lincoln through the kicking game, as LU's opponents are just 8-for-17 on field goals this season. The Blue Tigers have blocked seven kicks this year, ranking them fifth in NCAA Division II and first in the GLVC.
Â
ALIVE AND KICKING:Â Andrew Fishel is just a sophomore, but he has already become the program's all-time leader in successful extra point kicks. Fishel, who set a single-season record in that stat with 35 last year, has added 32 this season for 65 total made-PATs. That mark surpasses the old record of 49, set by Gerald Walker from 1963-65. Fishel also tied Walker's single game mark for made PATs with eight against Texas College.
Â
SACK KINGS:Â Lincoln has had a lot of success at getting to the passer, as its 27 total sacks rank 32nd nationally and fifth in the GLVC.
Davon Walls leads Lincoln with 8.5 sacks while
Eric Howard is next with four.
Â
DON'T STOP RUNNING:Â Leo Lewis' single-season rushing record stood for over 60 years before
Morris Henderson broke it with 1,266 yards last year. That mark, however, may only stand for one year, as Henderson is on pace to once again break the school rushing record. Henderson, who has a GLVC-high six 100-yard games, has 1,153 yards on the season and needs 114 more to once again re-write the record book.
Â
NEW SCORING KING?:Â Leo Lewis' single-season TD mark also has a chance at falling.
Morris Henderson has 20 TDs on the year and needs three more to break Lewis' record of 22, set in 1953.
Â
A DRAINE ON THE DEFENSE:Â Last year,
Khiry Draine led the Lincoln receiving corps in yards (680), yards per catch (19.4), touchdowns (seven) and yards per game (68.0). Draine has surpassed those marks in 2014, as he has posted team highs in receptions (51), receiving TDs (nine), yards (841) and yards per game (84.1, the fourth-most in the GLVC).
Â
...AND ON THE RECORD BOOK?:Â Khiry Draine broke the record for receiving yards in a season, as his 172 yards against McKendree gives him 841 on the season, beating Corderious Gregory's 2011 record of 791. Draine also tied LU's single-season receiving touchdown mark, as his two scoring grabs last Saturday give him nine, the most for a Blue Tiger since Mike West's nine in 1977.
Â
PUNTING AROUND:Â Julio Segura's punting has given Lincoln a big edge in field position, as 21 of his 57 kicks have pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line. Six of Segura's punts have gone at least 50 yards while 15 have forced opponents to call for a fair catch. By contrast, opposing punters have managed to pin Lincoln inside its own 20 on just 13 occasions and LU has only had to call for three fair catches.
Â
AT A LOSS:Â Davon Walls has been wreaking havoc on quarterbacks and running backs all season, registering 16 tackles for loss, the fourth-most in the GLVC and the 33rd-most in Division II. Walls, who is 25th in the nation with 8.5 sacks, has forced opponents to lose 57 yards on 36 total tackles this season.
Â
MILESTONE APPROACHING:Â With just one more win, the Blue Tigers would reach a program milestone in 2014. In its history, Lincoln has won 249 contests, and could reach win number 250 at some point this season.
