ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Lincoln baseball team finished with more hits, but a fifth inning run helped Missouri-St. Louis eke past the Blue Tigers, 1-0, in the second game of a double-header on Saturday (April 25). The Tritons also won the opener, 11-0.
Jonah Claborn gave up just four hits while pitching 5.1 innings during the second game.
Carter Otto relieved him and shut out the Tritons the rest of way while notching a strikeout.
Lincoln (6-37, 0-27 GLVC) had six hits in the late game, including two in the first inning.
Easton Stuckenschneider singled and took second on a wild pitch.
Jayden Little had a base hit later in the frame that advanced Stuckenschneider to third, but UMSL was able throw him out at the plate to keep the game scoreless.
Jacob Schulte and
Andy Srebroski IV each had hits in the third inning, but Schulte ended up being stranded on third. In the fourth inning,
Tim Fleming singled through the middle of the offense, then took second on a base hit by
Nolan Laughlin. A fly out, however, ended the inning.
The LU defense stranded Missouri-St. Louis (26-19, 20-7 GLVC) base runners in both the first and third frames, but the Tritons found a way to score the game's only run in the bottom of the fifth. UMSL hit a double, and that runner scored on a two-out single to give UMSL the 1-0 advantage. Fleming and Schulte each had five putouts to lead the Lincoln defense while
Daren Walters-Ansell turned three assists.
In the first game, the Tritons scored six runs in the opening inning and held the Blue Tigers to two hits, one each by Stuckenschneider and Fleming.
Kooper Houvouras had a pair of strikeouts on the mound for Lincoln while
Brody Kleffner fanned one. Laughlin posted a team-high five putouts, followed by Little and
Brody Johns with three apiece.
Blythe Blakey finished with three assists.
Lincoln closes its season series against Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday (April 26) with a 12:00 p.m. CDT contest.
