Blue Tigers Drop Twinbill to the Saints

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Lincoln baseball team dropped both games of a double-header against Maryville on Saturday afternoon (March 7). The Blue Tigers fell in the opening contest of the twinbill, 14-7, and lost the second game, 14-3.

The Blue Tigers got on the board first in the opening game, as Chase Morris drove in both Nolan Laughlin and Felix Marquez on a base hit into right field. Maryville (7-9, 3-0 GLVC) scored its first run of the day on wild pitch in the bottom of the second before taking a 3-2 lead on a two-RBI homer.

Andy Srebroski IV led the third inning off with a single, then later tied the game by scoring on a fielding error. The next two LU batters were beaned by pitches, loading the bases for Laughlin, who knocked the ball into right field to plate both Blythe Blakey and Brody Johns. That made the score 5-3, but a two-run homer in the bottom of the third allowed the Saints to even the score.

Lincoln (3-10, 0-3 GLVC) took its third lead of the ballgame in the top of the fourth, as Jayden Little hit a lead-off single and returned home on a double by Tim Fleming. Maryville responded in a big way in the bottom of the fourth, however, as the Saints scored eight runs on five hits and an error to take control of the contest. LU's only other run of the game was scored in the top of the fifth, when Morris drove in Laughlin on a single.

Little went 3-for-4 at the plate, Morris had two hits and three RBI and Laughlin drove in two runs on two hits. Easton Stuckenschneider also had a hit, and he and Little each stole a base. LU's opening pitcher, Brody Kleffner, struck out three Maryville batters while closer Ronan Podhola fanned one. Kleffner finished with two assists and Little led the defense with six putouts.

In game two of Saturday's twinbill, Maryville scored at least one run in each of the first five innings and held a 14-7 advantage in total hits. In the fifth inning, Little brought in Morris from second base with a hit lined through the right side of the defense. Lincoln's other two scores came in the sixth inning, as Diego Silva scored on a double by Marquez and Carson Erwin came home on a wild pitch.

Little had two hits in game two while Morris, Fleming, Marquez, Blakey and Daren Walters-Ansell each tallied one apiece. Hunter Mitchell struck out three Saint batters while Devin Hardy and Fleming notched one strikeout each. Stuckenschneider and Aiden Boeckmann tied for the team-lead with five putouts apiece.

Lincoln remains in St. Louis to play one final game in the season series against Maryville on Sunday (March 8). First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CDT.
