Blue Tigers Sweep Road Double Header

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Lincoln softball team won both games of a road double-header at LeMoyne-Owen on Tuesday evening (March 31). The Blue Tigers took advantage of some early runs and good pitching to win the opener, 4-3, then captured the second game via the run rule, 8-0.

Hannah Heisler scored LU's first run of the day on a ground out by Gracie Wright in the top of game one's opening inning. TK Lawson hit a two-RBI single in the second inning, plating both Reese Smith and Josie Stewart, and Wright got her second RBI of the afternoon in the third frame on a single that plated Heisler.

LeMoyne-Owen (5-19) attempted to rally, scoring one run in each of the third, fourth and fifth frames. Jaedin Blankenship pitched a tremendous game, though, striking out nine to earn the win in the circle. Maddie Sechrest struck out two batters in the final inning to earn the save.

Lawson had two hits for LU and Heisler, Reese Smith and Ella Percival each had one. Faith Jaegers led the Blue Tigers with 10 putouts and Stewart supplied six while Wright recorded three. Blankenship had a team-high three assists.

In the second game, Lincoln (13-12) had two big innings to wrap up the contest in just five frames. In the second inning, Kierra O'Rourke singled, reached third on an error and scored a base hit from Paige Rees. Abi Jorgensen later hit a double to plate both Rees and Marlee Brown, making it a 3-0 lead for LU. Heisler also had a base hit in the second to bring home Jorgensen for Lincoln's fourth run on the scoreboard.

The score remained 4-0 until the top of the fifth, when Wright and Ann-Marie Simpson each scored on an error. Lawson hit a home run later in the frame that also plated O'Rourke for the 8-0 final. Abrea Simmons pitched the complete game and gave up only one hit while ringing up six strikeouts.

Seven different Blue Tigers had hits in the night cap: Heisler, Simpson, O'Rourke, Smith, Lawson, Rees and Jorgensen. O'Rourke led LU with six putouts and Rees had a pair of assists.

Lincoln remains in Memphis, Tenn. on Wednesday (April 1) to play another double-header against LeMoyne-Owen at 12:00 p.m. CDT.
