Blue Tigers Sweep Series Against LeMoyne-Owen

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Lincoln softball team defeated LeMoyne-Owen two more times on Wednesday (April 1) to wrap up a 4-0 series sweep over the Lady Magicians. The Blue Tigers won the first game of the day, 10-3, and took the second, 11-0.

Josie Bezzole scored LU's first run of the day in the top of game one's opening frame, as she notched a double before scoring on a base hit from TK Lawson. Faith Jaegers, who reached on a walk, also scored on Lawson's hit for an early 2-0 Blue Tiger advantage. Jaegers scored on an error in the top of the third and the Blue Tigers took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third.

LeMoyne-Owen (5-20) capitalized on three hits and an error to tie the game in the bottom of the third, but a double by Kierra O'Rourke in the fifth inning allowed Josie Stewart to score, giving Lincoln (15-12) back the advantage. Paige Rees scored on a double laid down by Gracie Wright in the sixth inning, Ella Percival scored on a wild pitch and Stewart drove in Wright on a single to make the score 7-3 in favor of the Blue Tigers.

The Blue Tigers added three more insurance runs in the top of the seventh, starting with a single by Abi Jorgensen that, along with an error, allowed Rees to score once again. Percival hit a single to bring home Jorgensen, and she later scored on a base hit from Wright for the 10-3 final.

Wright went 3-for-5 at the plate while Lawson and Jorgensen each had two hits. Bezzole, Stewart, Jaegers, Rees and O'Rourke all finished with one hit apiece. Rees and Jorgensen each stole two bases and Ann-Marie Simpson took one. Mallorey Rogers struck out six batters in six innings in the circle while Maddie Sechrest notched two more strikeouts in the seventh inning. Stewart let LU with nine putouts and Jaegers finished with eight. Percival recorded four assists while Rees added three.

In game two, Lincoln scored in four of the contest's five innings to secure the series sweep. In the first inning, Hannah Heisler came home on a ground out by Stewart, Simpson scored on a base hit from Jaegers, and a single from O'Rourke drove in Jaegers. Stewart picked up her second RBI of the contest in the second inning by driving in Percival on a single.

Most of Lincoln's damage came in the third inning, beginning with a sacrifice fly from Bezzole bringing in Reese Smith. A double hit by Percival plated O'Rourke, and Percival later came home on a single from Heisler. Stewart later hit a double to drive in Heisler, and Jaegers scored both Stewart and Simpson with a double of her own, increasing the LU lead to 10-0.

In the top of the fifth, Rogers hit a double and later scored on a single from Marlee Brown for LU's final run of the series. Joss Marriott pitched the complete game and struck out three batters. Stewart led LU's defense with four putouts while Smith and Marriott each had two assists.

Lincoln racked up 14 hits during Wednesday's second game, including two apiece by Jaegers, O'Rourke, Simpson, Stewart and Heisler. Jordy Watkins also had a hit.

Due to inclement weather, Lincoln's weekend twinbill in Rolla, Mo. has been moved to Jefferson City. The Blue Tigers will host Missouri S&T in a 1:00 p.m. CDT double-header on Friday (April 3).
