JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Lincoln men's soccer team withstood a lightning delay and an aggressive Missouri S&T offense to win its GLVC opener, 3-1, at home on Sunday (Sept. 14).
Missouri S&T (2-1-1, 0-1-0 GLVC) controlled the time of possession for most of the second half, but Lincoln (3-0-0, 1-0-0 GLVC) played staunch defense, keeping the Miners out of the net. The only goal by the visitors came on a penalty kick in the 38th minute, as keeper
Vincent Osei made seven saves to keep LU undefeated on the season.Â
The Blue Tigers opened the scoring early, as
Junior Grizzelle took a pass from
Hadri Lopez and sent the ball past the Miner goalkeeper in the fifth minute of the contest. Exactly 20 minutes into the match, Lincoln was awarded a penalty kick, and
Kevon Maitland made the shot to increase the LU advantage to 2-0. Lincoln's final score came at the 37:04 mark, as Lopez kicked the ball into the net after a nice cross by
Jaheem Johnson.
Maitland had three shots on goal and five shots overall.
Santiago Brisco and Johnson each had three shot attempts, with two of Brisco's tries being on the goal.
Antwone Smith rounded out Lincoln's offense with two shot attempts, one of which was saved by the Miner keeper.
Lincoln will be back in the friendly confines of Dwight T. Reed Stadium on Friday night (Sept. 19) when the Blue Tigers host Southwest Baptist at 7:30 p.m. CDT.
