Lincoln Drops Three to UMSL

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Lincoln closed out a four-game series with Missouri-St. Louis by playing two games on Saturday (March 15) and one on Sunday (March 16). Below are recaps of those contests.

March 15: UMSL 10, LU 2
Missouri-St. Louis scored on an RBI single in the top of the first, and the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Tritons until the fifth inning of the first game on Saturday. Five hits and an error allowed the Tritons to break the game open, but Lincoln responded with a pair of scores in the bottom of the fifth. Ty Ollison and Chase Morris hit back-to-back singles to open the inning and a ground out by Andy Sreboski IV allowed Ollison to score. Jayden Little batted in Morris later in the frame for LU's other run.

Lincoln finished with seven hits, including two apiece by Ollison and Ryan Lepper. Jacob Schulte and Blythe Blakey produced LU's other hits. Jacob Zahner, meanwhile, pitched the entire game and struck out 10 UMSL batters while allowing only three earned runs.

Little led the Blue Tigers with nine putouts while Ollison was next with seven. Morris finished with a team-high four assists. Blakey added two assists and Lepper, Ollison and Zahner each finished with one.

March 15: UMSL 6, LU 2
It was a pitcher's duel through four innings, but UMSL scored six late runs to win Saturday's second contest in extra innings, 6-2.

The score was 0-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but the Blue Tigers got on board first as a two-run shot by Miguel Padron drove in Isaiah Figueroa for a 2-0 LU lead. Lincoln kept its shutout going in the sixth inning, but UMSL managed to push two runs across the plate in the top of the seventh on a base hit into center field. Figueroa hit a double in the bottom of the seventh, but ended up stranded, and the planned seven-inning contest entered an eighth frame.

A throwing error allowed the Tritons to break the tie, and Lincoln ended up committing three total errors while giving up two hits as UMSL took a 6-2 advantage. Little had a base hit in the bottom of the eighth, but that was as close as Lincoln came to rallying.

Ed Noy struck out three UMSL batters and Little and Padron each had six putouts. Ollison was next with four putouts while Morris and Schulte each recorded three. Noy and Blakey both provided two assists. Offensively, Little, Schulte, Padron, Ollison and Figueroa had hits for the Blue Tigers.

March 16: UMSL 18, LU 1
On Sunday, Missouri-St. Louis scored four runs in both the first and third innings and tacked on five scores in both the second and seventh frames en route to an 18-1 win over the Blue Tigers.

Lincoln's run came in the bottom of the second, as Brody Johns was hit by a pitch with two outs on the board. That brought up Morris, who hit a double down the left field line to drive in Johns. Lincoln had four total hits on Sunday, including one apiece by Sreboski, Figueroa and Blakey.

Dave Watkins III and Carter Otto each struck out a pair of Triton batters. Little finished with five putouts, Ollison supplied four and Padron and Johns each recorded three. Morris and Figueroa tied for the team-lead in assists with two apiece.

Lincoln hosts Lewis in a four-game series at Vivion Field next weekend. The teams meet for a 4:00 p.m. CDT contest on Friday (March 21) before playing a double-header at noon on Saturday (March 22, 12:00 p.m. CDT). Lincoln and Lewis close the series on Sunday (March 23) with a 12:00 p.m. CDT single game.
