JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -
Mikey West led the Lincoln men's basketball team with 19 points,
Franck Yetna scored 18 and
Andreas Fuller added 12 as the Blue Tigers beat William Jewell, 67-60, on Saturday (Feb. 22) to secure their winningest season in 24 years.
Lincoln improved to 19-7 overall and 11-7 in GLVC play with the win, which gives LU its most victories in a season since going 20-7 under Bill Pope in 2000-01.Â
West, Yetna and Fuller each collected six rebounds, helping LU to post a 37-25 advantage on the glass. Lincoln enjoyed hot shooting all game, but especially in the second half, as LU shot .542 from the floor and .900 at the free throw line. For the game, the Blue Tigers shot .490 from the field and .833 at the charity stripe.
Yetna led LU with four assists and blocked a shot while Fuller tallied an assist and a steal.
Max Ekono was the Blue Tigers' top rebounder, securing 11 to go with six points and a pair of assists.
Tyler Chapman had nine points, two boards and three assists on the afternoon while
Malcolm Davis closed the scoring with three points, three rebounds and a steal.
Tyson Robinson closed out Lincoln with an assist.
Lincoln scored the first five points of the contest and led until the 11:24 mark of the first half, when the Cardinals drained a jumper to go ahead, 13-12. Fuller made a layup to spark LU onto an 8-0 run, and the Blue Tigers never trailed the rest of the way, although William Jewell fought back to within 20-19 with four minutes until halftime. Back-to-back treys by Davis and Chapman gave LU a seven-point cushion and the Blue Tigers went into halftime ahead 29-25.
William Jewell (10-16, 7-11 GLVC) refused to go away in the second half, cutting its deficit down to 35-34 a quarter of the way through the period, but West hit back-to-back triples to restore LU's lead to seven. On two later occasions, WJC pulled back to within two, but each time the Blue Tigers had a response, with the end result ultimately being LU's third-straight victory.
The Blue Tigers will play for their 20th win of the season on Monday (Feb. 24) when Lincoln visits St. Louis, Mo. to play Maryville in a postponed contest originally supposed to be played on Jan. 25. Tip-off for that contest is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CST.
