Blue Tigers Beat Tiffin in Shootout

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Lincoln men's soccer team made four penalty kicks compared to three for Tiffin to beat the Dragons in the second round of the NCAA Division II Championship on Sunday (Nov. 23). The win sends Lincoln to the Sweet 16, where the Blue Tigers will play Rogers State next Sunday (Nov. 30) at a time and place to be determined.

After a scoreless first half, Tiffin (14-2-4) broke through with a goal at the 52 minute mark, as a shot that was deflected off the goalkeeper rolled into the net. Lincoln (12-1-6) scored the equalizer exactly 11 minutes later, as Joseph Lozano kicked the ball to Hadri Lopez, who headed it past the keeper and into the net.

Neither team was able to get on the board afterwards, as the score remained 1-1 at the end of regulation and after both overtime sessions. The Dragons kicked first, but Vincent Osei made the save. Lincoln missed its penalty try, then the Dragons scored to briefly take the penalty kick lead. Rajae Lawrence answered with a successful shot and, after another save from Osei, Santiago Brisco scored to put LU up 2-1.

The Dragons kept the pressure on, scoring on their fourth penalty attempt, but Santiago Brisco scored to put Lincoln back ahead in the competition. Tiffin managed to find the back of the net on their final kick, bringing up Lozano for LU with a chance to win the match. Lozano's aim was true and the Blue Tigers won the shootout, 4-3, to emerge victorious and head into the next round of the NCAA tourney.

Osei finished with five saves while Brisco led LU with three shot attempts. Lawrence had two shots, including one on goal, and Lozano tried two shots. Akwasi Agyepong and Jorge Arevalo each had shots on goal while Christopher Hull and Kevon Maitland also had shot attempts.
