JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Lincoln women's basketball team got the game off to a great start, but Indianapolis pulled away in the second half to beat the Blue Tigers, 68-53, on Thursday night (Jan. 30).
The Blue Tigers hit three-consecutive three-point shots in the first quarter, including two by
Emma Wolken and one by
Isis Sanders, and an old-fashioned three-point play by
Cassidy Gladney led to a 14-9 lead for LU with 2:38 remaining in the period. Back-to-back buckets by
Ayreona Carter later put Lincoln (1-16, 0-11 GLVC) ahead by seven, but a late jumper by Indianapolis (6-14, 4-8 GLVC) cut the LU lead down to 20-15 at the end of the opening stanza.
Gladney, who led Lincoln with 14 points, opened the second quarter by making two shots at the charity stripe, but the Greyhounds responded by going on an 8-0 run to take a 23-22 lead. Carter hit a layup to swing the advantage back to the Blue Tigers, but Indianapolis answered with an 11-2 run to take back the lead. A three-pointer by Gladney, who additionally provided two rebounds, a pair of steals and an assist, made the score 38-31 in favor the Greyhounds at halftime.
Imani Harris scored the first points of the third quarter to pull LU to within five, and Lincoln later get back within four twice in the period. Indianapolis led by 11 at the end of the third quarter, and the Blue Tigers never got closer than within eight during the final 10 minutes.
Carter had nine points, blocked two shots and secured four rebounds while
Kennedy Jones led the Blue Tigers with six boards to go with an assist.
Kaleah Toran totaled eight points, four rebounds, four steals and four assists. Wolken pulled down three rebounds and
Hanne Nybo added five points, four boards, a block and a steal. Sanders also scored five points and had two assists to go with three rebounds. Harris, meanwhile, finished the game with six points, two rebounds, two takeaways and an assist.
Lincoln is back in action in Jason Gym on Saturday (Feb. 1), hosting Illinois-Springfield at 1:00 p.m. CST.
