KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Lincoln softball team stepped out of MIAA play on Tuesday (March 28), but fell in both road games against Truman State. The Bulldogs won the opener, 8-0, and took the second game, 2-0.
The Blue Tigers had six hits in the second game, a closely-contested affair that saw both teams combine to strand 15 runners on base. LU nearly broke through in the top of the first inning, as
Leslie Callahan led the game off with a single and later advanced to third. The Blue Tiger defense held strong in the bottom half of the inning, as a ground out to third ended the frame with TSU runners on second and third.
Callahan had another base hit in the top of the third, but neither team would push a run across the plate until the bottom of the third. The Blue Tigers turned a double play early in the frame, throwing out a runner at third, but two consecutive hits, including a double, led to the Bulldogs scoring the first run of the contest. Two hits and an LU error later allowed the Bulldogs to score their second and final run in the fourth inning.
Madison Garcia had a single in the top of the fifth, and Lincoln (4-20) later loaded the bases in the top of the sixth.
Maris Ollison and
Emma Rakes each had hits in the frame, but an out at the plate followed by a lineout allowed Truman State (11-21) to escape with its 2-0 lead still intact.
Qwynn Marquez also had a hit for LU and
Ashton Stalling had a strikeout as the starter in the circle. Ollison had seven putouts while
Emily Williams and
Kennedy Schanuth each tallied two. Callahan posted a team-high four assists, Ollison turned two and
Myah Dwyer added one.
In the first game, Truman State scored three runs in the bottom of the first, and later used a pair of doubles to score four more in the fourth. Marquez and Ollison each had hits for Lincoln, and
Jordan Galliher struck out a TSU batter. Ollison led LU defensively with seven putouts, and Dwyer finished with three putouts and a pair of assists.
Jacqueline Marquez also had two assists.
