LU Falls in Final Road Game of 2023


KEARNEY, Neb. - Mo Alwaely made a pair of field goals, but the Lincoln football team fell to Nebraska Kearney, 38-6, in its final road game of 2023 on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 4).

Alwaely connected on a 49-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter to make it a 28-6 contest going into halftime. That kick was the longest successful field goal for an LU player since 2016, when Alex Templeton hit a 54-yard field goal at the end of regulation to give the Blue Tigers a 12-9 win over Lane. Alwaely previously scored LU's first points of the day in the opening quarter with a 35-yard field goal.

Nebraska Kearney (3-7) scored a pair of touchdowns in each of the first two quarters, but Lincoln (0-10) limited the Lopers to 10 points in the third quarter while shutting out UNK in the fourth. Michael Harrison and Ke'Ron Blankumsee each broke up a pass and registered four tackles, and the LU defense forced and recovered four fumbles on Saturday.

Bryant Coley, who made five tackles, forced two of those fumbles and recovered one. Ethan Garnett returned a fumble he recovered 28 yards and ended the day with five tackles, including 0.5 for loss. Kaleb Niebuhr, who also had five tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss on the afternoon, also forced one of the fumbles.

Cory Macon led Lincoln with 10 tackles, tallied 1.5 tackles for loss and forced and recovered a fumble. Jamahreon Smith had Lincoln's other fumble recovery while Vez Carter finished with six tackles. Jesse Brown, meanwhile, finished with eight tackles and a team-high 2.5 tackles for loss.

Xzavier Vaughn completed nine passes for 95 yards while Omar Allen led the ground attack with 45 rushing yards. Nathan Valencia caught a team-high four passes for 23 yards, and Charles Johnson led Lincoln with 41 receiving yards on three receptions. Clayton Winkler pinned UNK inside its 20 on three of his punts.

Lincoln returns home to play Central Missouri on Saturday (Nov. 11) at 12:00 p.m. CST. It will be Senior Day for the Blue Tigers, with a special ceremony to be held honoring LU's graduating players, as well as Military Appreciation Night in recognition of Veteran's Day.
