ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Lincoln softball team extended its winning streak to 11 with a pair of victories of University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy on Saturday afternoon (March 5). The Blue Tigers rallied to win the opener, 8-7, before dominating the second game, 11-3.
After two scoreless innings to start the opener, the Eutectics brought in three runs in the bottom of the third to begin what turned into a high-scoring affair. Lincoln (11-4) got on the board in the top of the fourth, as
Alivia Rymer drove in
Leslie Callahan on a sacrifice fly, but UHSP took advantage of a sacrifice of its own to make it a 4-1 contest heading into the fifth inning.
Callahan opened LU's comeback bid with a double that plated
Qwynn Marquez, and scored herself on a base hit by Rymer. That cut the deficit down to one, but the Eutectics opened the bottom of the fifth with a solo homerun that made the score 5-3 in their favor.
Emily Williams scored in the sixth to once again pull the Blue Tigers to within one, and Lincoln got some offensive fireworks in the seventh to complete the rally.
Emma Rakes scored on a double by
Ashton Stalling, and the Blue Tigers took their first lead of the day on a triple by Williams that brought home Stalling and
Jacqueline Marquez. Williams completed the scoring for LU by reaching the plate on a base hit by
Leah Wagner, the 11th hit of the contest by the Blue Tigers.
The University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy (2-2) nearly rallied as well, as the team led the bottom of the seventh off with a double and got two more hits to pull within 8-7. Stalling, who notched a strikeout en route to earning the win in the circle, ensured the Eutectics would not finish the comeback by forcing a pop up to first base for the game's final out.
Jordan Galliher opened the game in the circle and struck out five,
Jacqueline Marquez led the Blue Tigers with three hits, and Williams and Callahan each had two hits and a pair of runs. Chloe Olsen, who had a hit and an RBI, led LU defensively with 12 putouts, and Wagner was next with six. Galliher recorded four assists while
Jacqueline Marquez and Callahan each turned three.
While the first game was closely contested, the Blue Tigers turned the second game into an early route by scoring four runs in the top of the second. An RBI single by Rymer opened the scoring, and Callahan plated Olsen and
Katie Blair with a double. Stalling later reached home on a base hit from Rakes.
Stalling hit a triple in the top of the fourth to plate Olsen, and scored herself on a fielder's choice. Callahan drove in Rakes from second with a single to make the score 7-1 in favor of LU. The Blue Tiger bats stayed alive in the fifth inning, as back-to-back hits by Rymer and Olsen brought in two more runs.
Maddie Welker later hit a two-RBI double to complete the scoring, as the Blue Tigers out-hit the Eutectics, 11-9, while holding UHSP to just three runs.
Aidan Dayberry improved to 5-1 in the circle with a complete game, four-strikeout effort. Nine different Blue Tigers had a hit in the night cap, including
Jalia Callaway and
Kori Bullard, and Stalling scored three runs on two hits with three RBI. Williams, Blair and Olsen each scored twice, and Rakes had a pair of RBI while Rymer had two hits in the win.
Lincoln will return to Battle High School, its home field in 2022, on Wednesday (March 9) to play a double-header against Missouri S&T. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CST.
