Miller Homers, But Lincoln Falls to Missouri S&T

ROLLA, Mo. - Alex Miller hit a three-run homer, but the Lincoln softball team dropped an 8-3 decision to Missouri S&T in the second game of a road double-header on Tuesday (March 29). Missouri S&T also won the opener, 5-0.

The Miners built a 6-0 lead in the nightcap before Miller hit her home run in the top of the fourth. Alivia Rymer had led the inning off with a single, and a throwing error allowed Chloe Olson to get on base as well. Miller then entered the game as a pinch hitter and knocked a ball over the left field wall to put three runs on the board for LU.

Emma Rakes led that contest off with a single and stole second, but Missouri S&T (18-14) kept Lincoln (11-16) off the scoreboard outside of Miller's bomb. Jordan Galliher started in the circle and struck out three, and Katie Blair led LU defensively with four putouts. Olson recorded three outs while Rymer and Leslie Callahan each tallied two. Jacqueline Marquez led Lincoln with two assists.

Missouri S&T scored on an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning in the opener, but Lincoln kept the Miners off the board in the second inning. The third frame, however, proved to be the biggest difference in the game. A base hit following a triple allowed the Miners to double their score, then a two-run homer doubled it yet again. Missouri S&T later drove in another score to take a 5-0 lead through three.

The Blue Tigers tightened up defensively afterwards, facing just three batters in each of the fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth inning, Lincoln stranded two Miner base runners, but could not get on the board to begin a rally.

Rymer had a hit and Aidan Dayberry and Hannah Clark each struck out a pair of batters. Leah Wagner led the defense with five putouts, and Rymer and Marquez were each next with four apiece. Marquez also turned three assists, and Callahan and Clark were each responsible for two.

The Blue Tigers will resume MIAA play on Friday (April 1) as Lincoln visits Claremore, Okla. to play Rogers State in a double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. CDT.
