Blue Tigers Fall to Gorillas Despite Big Third Quarter


JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Lincoln women's basketball team held Pittsburg State to just 11 points during the third quarter, but the Gorillas scored at least 20 in each of the other three periods to claim a 75-55 victory over the Blue Tigers on Saturday (Feb. 5).

Niyah Jackson led LU with 14 points and three assists, and also had four rebounds, a block and a steal. Kylie Bernskoetter was next with 12 points and had a block, an assist and three boards. Imani Jones added seven points while Le'Yanna McGinnis led Lincoln with seven rebounds. McGinnis also finished with four points, two steals and a block.

After falling behind 41-21 at halftime, Lincoln (5-16, 1-14 MIAA) made a big push in the third quarter, shooting .500 from the field and .600 from beyond the arc. LU went on a 10-scoring run and held Pittsburg State (13-8, 8-7 MIAA) to just five field goals in the quarter, none of which came from beyond the arc. The Gorillas shot .462 in the final quarter, however, and held the Blue Tigers to .333 shooting overall to secure the win.

Kelsey Mitchell had five points and two rebounds on the afternoon, and Ashtin Ingram provided a block and four rebounds. Aliyah Bello also collected four boards and ended the day with two points, a steal and a block.

Haylie Holloway chipped in four points, Hya Haywood had a rebound and AJ Bradley drained a three in the fourth quarter. Mercy Gonzalez rounded out Lincoln with four points, four steals, three boards, an assist and a block.

Lincoln will be back in Jason Gym on Monday evening (Feb. 7) to play Missouri Southern in a 5:30 p.m. CST contest.
