Haywood Drops 22 in Final Road Game of 2021-22


WICHITA, Kan. - Hya Haywood poured in 22 points, but the Lincoln women's basketball team fell to Newman, 78-64, in its final road game of 2021-22 on Thursday night (Feb. 24).

Haywood shot 7-for-11 from the field, including 4-for-5 from beyond the arc, and made all four of her free throw attempts. She also tied for the team-lead with three steals and dished an assist while pulling down two rebounds.

The score was 12-7 in favor of Newman (3-24, 1-20 MIAA) at the end of the first quarter, but the Jets scored 24 points in each of the second and third periods to take a big lead into the final stanza. Lincoln (5-22, 1-20 MIAA) finished the game strong, shooting .500 overall and .600 from long distance over the final 10 minutes. The Jets shot .549 from the field and .526 from long range for the contest, however, and prevented LU from getting closer than within 14 during the second half.

Mercy Gonzalez and Kylie Bernskoetter each scored eight points, with Gonzalez registering a steal and grabbing three rebounds, and Deija Jackson chipped in nine points while AJ Bradley, who finished with three steals and two boards, added seven points to the Blue Tiger cause. Imani Jones led LU with nine rebounds and had a block and a steal while scoring three points.

Haylie Holloway came off the bench to provide two points, a pair of steals and two rebounds, and Ashtin Ingram had two boards and an assist. Niyah Jackson closed the scoring with five points, a steal, and a team-high four assists.

Lincoln will close the season at home on Saturday (Feb. 26) by hosting Central Missouri at 1:00 p.m. CST. It will be Senior Day, with a special ceremony scheduled for after the game.
