Blue Tigers Fall to Newman Despite 54 Second Half Points


WICHITA, Kan. - The Lincoln men's basketball team scored 54 points in the second half, but Newman held on to beat the Blue Tigers, 89-76, on Thursday evening (Feb. 24).

Mark Boland led three Blue Tigers in double figures with 17 points, three rebounds and an assist. John Gaines dropped four dimes and ended the night with 14 points and three boards while Alafia Oluwasogo finished with 10 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists.

Newman (5-21, 2-19 MIAA) raced out to a 50-22 halftime lead, but Lincoln (3-23, 2-19 MIAA) stormed back in the second half, shooting .567 overall and .438 from three-point range. LU went on a 17-4 run early in the second half, and got the lead down to 11 when Boland hit a free throw after being fouled on a successful three-point shot with 1:12 remaining. The Jets made four free throws down the stretch, however, while Gaines provided the final points of the night for LU on a jumper inside the paint with 40 seconds to play.

Derrick Woods led Lincoln with six rebounds and chipped in five points while recording a steal. Chuck Wilson pulled down five rebounds and added nine points, while Yaniel Vidal also scored nine while grabbing two rebounds and dishing two assists. Ni'Sean Rigmaiden had a seven-point, five-rebound, two-assist, one-steal performance, and Mekhi Kimble closed out the Blue Tigers with five points and a pair of rebounds.

Lincoln will wrap up the season on Saturday (Feb. 26) by hosting Central Missouri at 3:00 p.m. CST. It will be Senior Day, with a special ceremony held prior to the start of the contest.
