Clutch Three-Point Shooting Helps Lincoln Beat Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Lincoln men's basketball team made seven three-pointers in the second half to pull away for a 67-62 win over Newman on Monday night (Feb. 21).

Ni'Sean Rigmaiden and Chuck Wilson each scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds, with Rigmaiden dishing four assists and Wilson dealing three to go with a pair of steals. The Blue Tigers out-rebounded the Jets, 41-34, and scored 24 points off fast breaks. Mark Boland and Mekhi Kimble each added nine points, with Kimble additionally recording two steals.

The game was tied on four occasions with the lead changing seven times as the teams battled throughout the night. Lincoln (3-22, 2-18 MIAA) led 34-30 at halftime, but Newman (4-21, 1-19 MIAA) fought back to take a six-point advantage with 7:46 remaining. Rigmaiden hit a trey to cut the deficit down to three, and tied the game at 52 on a catch-and-shoot after Wilson grabbed a defensive rebound. Wilson gave LU back the lead with a fast break jumper, and Rigmaiden hit yet another trey to increase the advantage to 57-52.

Rigmaiden wasn't finished yet, as he drained his fourth trey of the night on LU's next possession to make it an eight-point contest. Newman responded by scoring the game's next five points, but the run ended when Wilson converted an old-fashioned three-point play. The Jets would eventually cut the LU lead down to three, but Wilson made three free throws and Rigmaiden connected on one in the game's final seconds to seal the victory.

Yaniel Vidal came off the bench to provide six points and two rebounds, and Josh Wallace finished with five points and five boards. Derrick Woods pulled down seven rebounds to go with eight points, and John Gaines closed the scoring with four points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Alafia Oluwasogo provided four rebounds and two assists to the winning cause.

The Blue Tigers will play a rematch against Newman on Thursday (Feb. 24), this time in Wichita, Kan. with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST.
