Blue Tigers Hit Three Homers, but Fall in Extra Innings

ROLLA, Mo. - The Lincoln softball team battled hard for nine innings, racking up 12 hits, including three homers, but an RBI single helped Missouri S&T edge the Blue Tigers, 11-10, in the evening game of a double-header on Wednesday (April 21). In the opener, Lincoln struck first, but the Miners ended up winning, 10-1.

In the second game, Jordan Hollon led the game off with a home run, and after a walk was issued to Leslie Callahan, Kendra Holt blasted another ball over the fence to give Lincoln a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The Miners got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning, but yet another homer, this one from Alivia Rymer in the second frame, gave the Blue Tigers back a three-run advantage.

Missouri S&T (7-27) drove in two more scores in the bottom of the second, and the game would remain 4-3 in favor of the Blue Tigers until the bottom of the fourth. The Miners took their first lead of the contest on a home run of their own, this one a two-run shot to put Missouri S&T ahead, 5-4.

The lead would not hold for long, however, as in the fifth inning, Callahan hit a single, Jordan Lawson doubled, and Holt brought both players in with a bases-clearing single to put Lincoln (6-33-1) ahead by one. The momentum continued to swing back and forth, though, as the Miners hit another two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth for a 7-6 lead.

A bases-loaded walk issued to Lawson in the top of the sixth tied the game at seven, and Holt was hit by a pitch in the next frame to put LU back on top, 8-7. Holt finished with five RBI in the contest. Lincoln kept the Miners from scoring in the bottom of the sixth, and plated one more run in the top of the seventh on a ground out from Leah Wagner that brought home Alex Miller.

A pair of RBI singles allowed Missouri S&T to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, however, and the extra innings began. The teams used the international tie-breaking system, and Hollon began the eighth on second base. Emily Williams drove her in with a ground out, and Lincoln briefly regained a 10-9 edge on the scoreboard.

The Miners scored with two outs on the board in the bottom of the frame, setting up the crucial ninth inning. A walk issued to Qwynn Marquez gave Lincoln a pair of base runners, but the Miners kept LU off the scoreboard. In the bottom of the ninth, Lincoln forced a ground-out, but Missouri S&T was still able to score the winning run.

Rymer went 4-for-4 at the plate, and Miller and Bekah Kirker each had a hit while Holt and Lawson both had two. Tressa Hughes started the contest and fanned four Miner batters, and Maddie Welker notched a K in the closing role. Holt had a team-high six putouts, followed by Wagner and Kirker with five apiece. Callahan turned five assists.

In the first game of the day, Williams singled up the middle to plate Lawson in the top of the third, and LU held onto the one-run lead until the bottom of the fifth. The Miners brought in seven runs during that inning and held for the victory.

Lawson went 2-for-2 at the plate while Callahan, Holt, Williams and Miller also had hits. Welker started the game and struck out three batters. Holt led LU with seven putouts, while Callahan had a team-high three assists.

Lincoln will be off for a week before closing its non-conference slate with a twinbill in Liberty, Mo. against William Jewell on Wednesday, April 28. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. CDT.
