Potts & Witt Double Up in 80-73 Victory

WICHITA, Kan. - Cameron Potts and Sai Witt posted double-doubles as the Lincoln men's basketball team beat Newman, 80-73, on the road on Thursday night (Feb. 11).

Potts nearly recorded a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to go with eight assists, a pair of steals and a block. Witt led LU with 20 points and had 12 rebounds as well as three blocks. Quinton Drayton, who had 18 points, four boards and two assists, and Yaniel Vidal, who scored 12, also finished in double figures.

Lincoln (9-8, 9-8 MIAA) shot an impressive .630 in the first half en route to a 39-26 lead at the break. The Blue Tigers connected on five of their nine attempts from three-point land over the course of the first 20 minutes while allowing Newman (2-14, 2-14 MIAA) to sink just two of its own nine attempts from long distance.

The Blue Tigers never trailed in Thursday's contest, and had the lead for good after Potts hit a jumper to break a 19-19 tie entering the final six minutes of the first half. LU took a double-digit lead into half, and kept its advantage to 10 points or greater until the 12:18 mark in the second half. An old-fashioned three-point play sparked Newman onto a 7-0 run, and the Jets eventually clawed their way back to within two on a trey that made it a 58-56 affair with 7:40 remaining.

Derrick Woods and Witt hit jumpers to put LU back up by six, and a layup from Witt gave Lincoln a late 75-66 lead with 1:22 to play. Potts later capped of the Blue Tigers' victory with a dunk off a fast break. For the game, the Blue Tigers shot .544 from the field and finished with a 35-30 advantage in rebounding.

Woods scored six points, and Charles Wilson closed the scoring with five points, three assists and a steal. Jordan Notch and Mekhi Kimble each had a rebound as Lincoln earned its first road win of 2021.

The Blue Tigers will return to Jason Gym on Saturday (Feb. 13) to play Emporia State at 3:00 p.m. CST.
