Woods and Wilson Combine for 34 but Blue Tigers Fall to the Mavericks


KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Derrick Woods and Chuck Wilson each scored 17 points, but a big first-half run helped Minnesota State-Mankato beat the Lincoln men's basketball team, 92-69, on Sunday (Nov. 14). The game was played in Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium as part of the MIAA-hosted Central Region Challenge.

Woods additionally grabbed four rebounds and dished an assist while Wilson had a steal to go with three boards. John Gaines came off the bench to score nine and dish a team-high three assists, while Aaron Burt provided six points and four rebounds.

Minnesota State-Mankato (2-0) opened the game on a 9-2 run, but Lincoln (0-2) rallied to cut the deficit down to three on a pair of free throws by Wilson. The big difference came in the last 10 minutes of the half, however, as the Mavericks went on a 14-4 run to take control of the contest. A trey by Wilson allowed LU to cut the lead down to 13 early in the second half, but the Blue Tigers were unable to maintain the rally.

Lincoln shot .400 from beyond the arc and .917 from the free throw line, but the Mavericks shot .644 for the game and held a 32-26 advantage on rebounding. Destan Williams scored six points and dropped two dimes, Mark Boland tallied five points and three boards, and Josh Williams provided four points, a pair of assists and two rebounds. Ni'Sean RIgmaiden, meanwhile, contributed three points, three boards, two assists and a steal.

Mekhi Kimble had two points to close the scoring for LU, and Alafia Oluwasogo collected two rebounds.

Lincoln will be off until Nov. 23, when the Blue Tigers open the Maryville Thanksgiving Classic with a 5:30 p.m. CST game against Missouri-St. Louis in St. Louis, Mo.
