THE LEAD OFF:Â The Lincoln softball team heads down to Huntsville, Ala. this weekend to play six games in the Charger Chillout 2.0, hosted by Alabama-Huntsville. The tournament kicks off for LU on Friday (Feb. 8) when the Blue Tigers play Christian Brothers at 2:00 p.m. CST. LU will play Montevallo at 4:00 p.m. CST on Friday before returning on Saturday morning (Feb. 9) to take on the host school in an 11:00 a.m. CST showdown. At 1:00 p.m. CST on Saturday, Lincoln will play Miles, then will close the tourney on Sunday (Feb. 10) with a 9:00 a.m. CST game vs. Shorter and a 1:00 p.m. CST contest against Kentucky Wesleyan. LU is 0-2 on the season after falling in a double-header at Lane last Saturday (Feb. 2).
PREVIEWING THE BLUE TIGERS:Â Lincoln's starting pitchers had a strong opening weekend, with Shannon Greene striking out seven batters and Hanah Hennessy fanning eight in LU's double-header at Lane. Camryn Pryor had four hits in six at-bats, and Jordan Lawson, who set the Blue Tiger single season doubles record in 2018, had three hits overall, including a pair of doubles. Casey Grover also had multiple hits on the day while five other Blue Tigers had one hit apiece in the first games of 2019.
HEAD COACH CHRISTINE ENGBERS:Â Engbers was named the head coach of the Blue Tigers in 2018 after a successful two-year run at Covenant, where she won 45 games and became the first coach to lead the Lady Scots to back-to-back years with winning records. Engbers, in her first season at Lincoln, was an All-American as a player at Covenant.
LAST TIME OUT:Â The Blue Tigers opened the 2019 season last Saturday (Feb. 2) with a twinbill at Lane. Below are brief recaps of those contests:
Game 1: LC 6, LU 1: Â Lane scored three runs in each of the first and second frames and held off Lincoln to take the opener, 6-1. Hannah Hennessy struck out eight in a complete game performance while Casey Grover scored LU's first run of the year on a double by Gabi McGinty.
Game 2: LC 2, LU 1: Â The Blue Tigers out-hit the Dragons, 9-7, and scored first on a single from Mykenzie Livesay in the top of the second. Lane answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, and held on to win, 2-1, in Saturday's night cap. Camryn Pryor went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored Lincoln's run while Jordan Lawson hit a pair of doubles. Shannon Greene fanned seven in the circle for LU.
SCOUTING THE LADY BUCS:Â Kaitlyn Powers and Maddi Welch each have five hits, with Welch tied with Sierra Anderson with three RBI apiece. Powers (.556) and Rachel Whitley (.500, three hits) have the best batting averages through the early part of the season, and Macy Cumming leads the rotation with a 2.80 ERA and five strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS:Â Montevallo has a combined team ERA of 1.08, having allowed just four earned runs through four games. Abbey Pratt and Mychael McMillan are both 1-0 in the circle, while Alexis Bonanno is 1-1. All three players have yet to give up an earned run. Offensively, the Falcons are led by Haley Barnette with seven hits and four RBI.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS:Â Reagan Malone has eight hits and is batting .471 while Mackenzie Nutt and Shelby Booker each have seven hits for an Alabama-Huntsville team that is batting .277 through its first six games. UAH has a team ERA of 4.10 and is led in the circle by Layton Murphy and Sydnee Uhlman, who each have rung up seven strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS:Â Miles has two batters hitting above .200: Zakierra Webb, who leads the team with five hits and an average of .333, and Davis Watkins, who has scored four runs on the season. Magen Rich leads the team's rotation with five strikeouts in 21 innings, as the Golden Bears have an ERA of 10.93.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS:Â Shorter is batting .293 as a team, with six players hitting over .250. That includes leading hitter Taylor Martin, who has collected seven hits, five runs and five RBI and is batting .467 for the season. Tiffany Holland bats is a .455 hitter who has scored seven runs on 10 hits while Sydney Poston and Dani Lukas each have six hits on the year. Julie Sanderlin is 2-0 in the circle.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS:Â KWU is the only team LU will face this weekend that has yet to play a game in 2019. The Panthers return their top hitter, Meredith Daunhauer, who scored 50 runs on 83 hits in 2018. In the circle, Kentucky Wesleyan returns both Evyn Hendrickson and Maci Brown, each won 10 games a year ago.
ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOK: With a double in LU's opener vs. Lindenwood, Jordan Lawson added her name to the Lincoln record book. She now has hit 17 doubles on the season, breaking the previous record of 14 set by Brenda Stegler in 2008 and Angie Parker in 1986.
ON DECK:Â Lincoln makes the short trip up to Columbia, Mo. on Wednesday (Feb. 13) to play Stephens in a 4:00 p.m. CST double-header.
