ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Three Blue Tigers scored in double figures, but the Lincoln men's basketball team came up just short against Maryville as LU dropped a 65-61 decision on Tuesday (Nov. 26). The contest was played on the campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis as part of the UMSL Thanksgiving Classic.
L'Kielynn Taylor posted a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and
Jonell Burton led LU with 24 points while tallying three blocks, three assists and a steal.
Jordan Notch nearly had a double-double himself, finishing with 12 points, nine boards and a block.
In a game that featured seven ties and 17 lead changes, the difference came beyond the arc, where Maryville hit 11 of its 29 attempts while limiting the Blue Tigers to just six triples. Lincoln (2-3) shot .443 for the contest while Maryville (3-2) shot .407, and the Blue Tigers held a 42-31 advantage in rebounding. 12 of those boards were courtesy of
Cameron Potts, who also scored four points, blocked two shots and dished four assists.
It was also a game of runs, as Lincoln scored 11-straight points to take a 58-48 lead with 6:34 remaining. Maryville answered with an 8-0 run of its own, which
Jonell Burton halted with a free throw. The Saints later hit a three to tie the game at 59 entering the final three minutes of play.
Another trey gave MU the lead, though Notch made it a one-point contest with a jumper with 1:09 left on the clock. After the Saints went one-for-two at the line, Lincoln had a chance to tie the game or take the lead as the clock ticked down the remaining seconds. Maryville forced a turnover, however, and made two more free throws to secure the four-point victory.
Bansi King came off the bench to provide eight points, two rebounds and a pair of steals for the Blue Tigers, and
Marcel Burton closed the scoring with three points while dishing a team-high five assists.
