Burton Scores 40, But Blue Tigers Fall in Overtime


ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Jonell Burton scored 40 points, but the Lincoln men's basketball team fell to Harris-Stowe in the Show Me Classic in overtime, 89-84, on Friday night (Nov. 22).

Jonell Burton also pulled down six rebounds, blocked two shots and tallied a steal, and Marcel Burton added 21 points and four boards. L'Kielynn Taylor had a team-high 12 rebounds and chipped in two points to go with four assists and a steal.

Lincoln (2-2) led for the entire first half, shooting .567 from the field and .455 from beyond the arc. The Blue Tigers held a 39-35 lead at the break, but Harris-Stowe (3-2) scored the first seven points of the second half to take its first lead of the evening.

The Hornets shot .593 from the floor in the second half and led by as many as eight, holding a 63-55 advantage with 9:57 to play. Jonell Burton scored five-straight points to pull the Blue Tigers back within three, then later in the period made a trey to pull LU to within 67-65.

A layup off a fast break tied the game, but the Hornets scored seven-straight to go up 74-67. Lincoln answered with a 7-0 run of its own over the final two minutes, with all seven points scored by Jonell Burton. Harris-Stowe had one last chance for a win in regulation, but Marcus Cohen forced a steal to send the game into an extra frame.

The Blue Tigers scored first in overtime and took an 82-78 lead on a pair of free throws with 2:10 to play. Harris-Stowe, however, converted an old-fashioned three-point play to get within one, then hit a trey to take the lead for good. For the game, Harris-Stowe shot .508 from the field while Lincoln shot .467.

Cohen finished with six points, four assists and three steals, and Cameron Potts added six points, five assists, four boards, a pair of steals and a block. Jordan Notch recorded four points and three rebounds, and Lamont Ballard added two points while Bansi King scored three. DaMani Jarrett also represented LU with an assist.

Lincoln will next play in the UMSL Thanksgiving Classic, playing a pair of games on the campus of Missouri-St. Louis. LU will take on Maryville on Tuesday (Nov. 26) at 3:00 p.m. CST before playing UMSL on Wednesday (Nov. 27) at 1:00 p.m. CST.
