Lawson Breaks Doubles Record Against Lindenwood

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Jordan Lawson added her name to the Lincoln softball record book on Monday (April 16) with a pair of doubles against Lindenwood. The Blue Tigers dropped both games, as Lindenwood beat Lincoln, 12-3, in the opener, and then used a late run to take the second contest, 6-5.

Lawson hit her 15th double of the 2018 campaign in Monday's first game, breaking the record for two-base hits in a season. Lawson, who notched her 16th double of the season in the night cap, entered the week tied with Angie Parker (1986) and Brenda Siegler (2014) with 14 on the year. Lawson ended up tallying three hits on the afternoon, including two in the second contest.

Lindenwood (23-19) used a solo homerun in the top of the first to take the early lead in Monday's night cap, then drove in four runs in the third inning to seemingly take control of the contest. Lincoln (5-37) battled back, however, starting in the bottom half of the third when Madison Ragar, who led the frame off with a single, scored on a base hit by Lawson. Tori Nienhueser was issued a walk to load the bases, and another walk, this one to Andrea Wanta, led to Mykenzie Livesay scoring to bring the Blue Tigers within three.

In the fourth inning, Lawson pulled the Blue Tigers to within one of the Lady Lions on a double that plated both Rachael Balke and Camryn Pryor. In the very next at-bat, Nienhueser hit a base hit into left field, allowing Livesay to score again and tied the contest at five. The score would remain even through the fifth frame, as both teams stranded a pair of base runners in the inning. For the contest, Lincoln left 10 runners on base while Lindenwood stranded nine.

The Lady Lions led the sixth inning off with a walk, then used a stolen base and a single to plate the eventual winning run. Lincoln managed to get a runner on second in each of its final two offensive innings, but Lindenwood found a way to keep the Blue Tigers off the board to escape with the win.

Ragar joined Nienhueser and Lawson with two hits, and Livesay, Pryor and Emily Williams each had one apiece. Pryor had eight putouts, and Nienhueser and Wanta each finished with three assists. Delayne Patton tallied a strikeout in the circle.

In the opener, Lindenwood scored a run in the top of the first, then extended its lead to 4-0 with three more scores in the second. The Blue Tigers got one back in the bottom of the second, as Nienhueser led the frame off with a double, advanced to third on a base hit from Kiley Kerr, and then scored on a single by Williams. Nienhueser later helped cut the Lindenwood advantage down to one in the bottom of the fifth, as she followed Lawson's record-breaking double with a homerun to make it a 4-3 ballgame.

Errors ended up hurting the Blue Tigers the rest of the way, however, as Lindenwood scored eight combined runs, all unearned, in the sixth and seventh innings to win the ballgame by nine. The Lady Lions held just an 11-9 edge in hits, as Lincoln stranded nine runners on the base path throughout the contest.

Nienhueser went 3-for-3 at the plate and Kerr had two hits while Wanta had one. Alyssa Schulte struck out two Lady Lion batters, and Livesay had a team-high six putouts while Pryor was next with four. Balke and Nienhueser each had two assists.

With Tuesday's (April 17) home games against Drury canceled, Lincoln is next scheduled to be in action on Friday (April 20) when the Blue Tigers host Central Missouri in a 2:00 p.m. CDT double-header.
