JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -
Tempary Gunter made a layup as time expired to lift the Lincoln women's basketball team to a 72-70 victory over McKendree on Wednesday night (Nov. 21).
The win improved Lincoln to 4-0 for just the second time in program history and the first time since 2011-12. McKendree, meanwhile, fell to 3-2.
Lincoln led for most of the contest, including holding a 63-53 advantage after an
Alecia Gulledge jumper with 4:59 remaining, but a Bearcat trey began a furious rally over the game's final minutes. McKendree made just four of its 20 attempts from three-point range in the contest, but hit another trey to pull within three with 2:48 remaining. The team's exchanged buckets until Gulledge hit a free throw at the 1:02 mark to put LU ahead, 70-66.
McKendree connected on a layup with 47 seconds to play, then forced a quick turnover and scored again to pull within two. After a missed jumper, the Bearcats got the ball back with 18 seconds to play, and hit another quick layup to knot the score up at 70. The Blue Tigers got the ball back with 11 ticks left on the clock, and
Zoi Thompson drove the lane for a jump shot that just missed the mark. Gunter, who ended the game with six points, four rebounds, two steals and an assist, grabbed the board and tossed up a shot that just beat the buzzer for a two-point victory.
Thompson had 20 points, five assists and four rebounds on the night while
Zhanesha Dickerson posted her third double-double of the season, tallying 23 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Gulledge had eight points and seven rebounds as well as a block, and
Alecia Kaelke provided nine points, four boards, an assist, a block and a steal to the winning effort.
Kiara Shoulders dished three assists and pulled down six rebounds to go with four points.
Shannyn Triplett made her LU debut and sank a pair of free throws.
McKendree out-rebounded the Blue Tigers, 42-37, but Lincoln turned 14 offensive rebounds into 22 second-chance points, which proved to be the biggest difference in the game.
The Blue Tigers will try to improve to 5-0 for the first time in program history on Monday (Nov. 26) when Lincoln welcomes Blackburn to Jason Gym for a 6:00 p.m. CST contest.
