JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - William Jewell scored late in the first quarter and again in the fourth to hand the Lincoln football team a 13-3 loss on Saturday (Nov. 4).
The Lincoln defense had another strong performance, generating four sacks and seven tackles for loss while breaking up three passes and recording a pair of hurries. Willard Cotton led LU with 10 tackles, including one for a loss, as well as two pass break-ups, and
Addison Tucker was next with nine. Edwin Durassaint had a pair of sacks and was next on the defensive chart with eight stops.
William Jewell (2-8, 2-5 GLVC) became just the second team all season to pass for at least 200 yard on the Blue Tigers, finishing with 215 to pair with 112 rushing yards. Lincoln (1-8, 0-6 GLVC) limited the Cardinals to just 2.8 yards per carry, but WJC ended up converting seven of 16 third down attempts and held the ball for 35 minutes and 21 seconds.
Lincoln had opportunities to score, including in the second quarter, a seven-yard completion to Justin Korakakos moved the Blue Tigers down to the WJC 39. Terry Hunter later gave LU a first down at the 32, but a fourth-down attempt later in the drive ended up just short of the first down marker.
In the third quarter, passes by Drake Davidson of 12 yards to Korakakos and 16 yards to A'Jani Johnson got LU back inside William Jewell territory, but an interception in the end zone ended the drive. Later in the period, Hunter rushed for 35 yards on four carries to drive LU down to the 10, and Wolky Belancourt capped off the possession by hitting a 35-yard field goal to put Lincoln on the scoreboard.
Hunter finished with 66 rushing yards on the afternoon while Davidson threw for 76. Korakakos was LU's top receiver with six grabs for 33 yards. Belancourt, meanwhile, averaged 63 yards on kickoffs and 44.7 yards on punts with a long of 60.
Anthony Mitchell had a sack for Lincoln and Isaiah Gray and
Julius Jackson combined on another. Joseph Madrigal supplied an additional tackle for loss and Aaron Brown totaled eight tackles while Gray was next with seven.
Jervonta Jones finished with six tackles, including one for a loss, and Phillip Kind had LU's other deflection.
Saturday was Senior Day as well as the final home game of the season for Lincoln. At halftime, a ceremony was held to honor seniors Brown,
Deonte Cooper, Cotton,
Miles Drummond, Gray,
Lawrence Hogue, Jackson,
Jeff Jones,
Jervonta Jones, Kind, Taj Moore, Tucker, Jay Westray and
Christian Winston.
The Blue Tigers will close the 2017 season on the road next Saturday with a trip to Bolivar, Mo. to play Southwest Baptist at 12:00 p.m. CT.
