Blue Tigers Top Langston to Win Battle of the LUs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Terrance Smith scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds while three other Blue Tigers finished in double figures as the Lincoln men's basketball team beat Langston, 74-65, to win the Battle of the LUs on Friday night (Nov. 17).

Marquise Williams posted his second double-double of the season, tallying 15 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, and John Burton scored 16 to go with four rebounds. Amariontez Ivory chipped in 11 points, pulled down five rebounds and led LU with five assists and four steals. Burton and Smith each also blocked shots.

Langston (4-3) opened the scoring with a three-pointer, then later hit a layup to take a 19-10 lead over Lincoln (3-1) with 10:28 to play in the opening half. The Lions later held a 23-12 edge over the Blue Tigers, but a Marquise Williams layup sprung the Blue Tigers onto a 16-0 run, giving Lincoln a 28-23 lead with just under three minutes until halftime.

The Lions would later pull within two, but Ivory hit a buzzer-beating three from close to halfcourt to send the Blue Tigers into the locker room with a 36-31 advantage. Langston would ultimately cut that lead down to one early in the second half, but Ivory hit another three with 15:08 remaining to put the Blue Tigers up, 49-38, and give Lincoln control of the ball game.

Lincoln limited Langston to .357 shooting from the floor in the second half and forced the Lions into 18 total turnovers while committing just nine. Lincoln shot .475 from the floor and made eight treys in the contest while finishing with a slight 33-32 edge in rebounding.

Calvin Chambers finished with five boards, four assists, a pair of steals and two points, and Zack Fields came off the bench to score six. Closing out the scoring for Lincoln was Destiny Chikwem-Stanley, who had four points, two rebounds and an assist.

Lincoln will have the week off before heading to Springfield, Ill. to play two games at Drury University. The first is next Friday (Nov. 24) as the Blue Tigers play William Jewell at 1:00 p.m. CST.
