Big Second Half Pushes ASU Past The Blue Tigers

ALBANY, Ga. - The Lincoln football team opened the second half with the lead, but Albany State pulled away for a 30-10 win over the Blue Tigers on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 7).

The Lincoln defense blocked its sixth kick of the season in the first quarter, as Edwin Durassaint got his hand on an extra point try to hold ASU to a 6-0 lead. The Blue Tigers answered in the second quarter, as on the first play of the period a one-yard dive by Harold Lacy gave Lincoln a 7-0 lead. Lacy also had a 23-yard run earlier in that drive while a 10-yard completion from Eugene Sainterling to Blake Tibbs moved the ball down to the one.

Albany State (4-2) responded by driving to the Lincoln (1-4) 22 before using a 40-yard field goal to re-take the lead, 9-7. Towards the end of the half, however, Wolky Belancourt nailed a 40-yard field goal of his own to give Lincoln a 10-9 advantage at halftime. Travis Martin gained 22 yards on three-straight carries on that scoring drive.

The Golden Rams recovered a fumble in Lincoln territory early in the third quarter, and converted the turnover into seven points on a six-yard run. ASU went on to score another touchdown later in the quarter and again in the fourth to pull away for the win. Lincoln's next-best scoring opportunity came at the end of the game, as Sainterling drove the Blue Tigers 76 yards before time expired with LU facing a second-and-goal at the ASU nine.

Sainterling completed 17 passes for 158 yards, and Martin led the LU rushing attack with 59 yards while Lacy was next with 36. Antonio Issac had six grabs for 46 yards to lead the Blue Tiger receiving corps, and A'Jani Johnson caught three passes for 33 yards while Terry Hunter had two catches for 29 yards.

Willard Cotton led the LU defense with seven tackles, including one for loss, and Addison Tucker, Victor Williams, JaJuan Chambers and Aaron Brown were each credited with four tackles. Jervonta Jones had a sack, and the Blue Tigers totaled six tackles for loss. Cotton and Durassaint each had quarterback hurries.

The Blue Tigers will be back in Jefferson City for their next two contests, starting next Saturday (Oct. 14) with a 3:30 p.m. CDT game against Missouri S&T. It will be Lincoln's annual Think Pink game, and fans are invited to join the Blue Tigers in wearing pink to help raise awareness of cancer and to show support to survivors.
