JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Washburn broke a tie with a big sixth inning as the Ichabods gave the Lincoln baseball team a 20-3 loss on Friday (April 22).
After falling into a 3-0 hole after the second inning, the Blue Tigers began their comeback in the third when
Laban Petzoldt scored from second on a base hit by
Mike Million. After stranding a Washburn runner on third in the ensuing frame, Lincoln tied the contest up in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of RBI singles.
Mason Price led the fourth inning off by being hit by a pitch, and a pair of walks were issued to
Zach Anderson and
Jackson Walker to load the bases.
Daniel Castillo then made it a one-run game with a single that kept the bags full while bringing in Price. In the very next at-bat,
Laban Petzoldt used a base hit to score Anderson, tying the contest at three-all.
Neither team got on the board in the fifth, with Million being stranded in scoring position during LU's turn at bat. In the top of the sixth, however, Washburn (27-13, 22-8 MIAA) scored 12 runs on eight hits, including a pair of homeruns, to take a commanding lead. After forcing Lincoln (1-39, 0-30 MIAA) to go three-up, three-down in the bottom of the frame, the Ichabods brought in five more scores in the seventh, including four on a grand slam.
Price and
Dillon Walker also had hits for LU.
Kaleb Davis led the Blue Tiger defense with nine putouts while
Nick Lovell was next with four.
Dillon Walker, Lovell, Anderson and
Kolton Clark each turned two assists, with Clark also notching two strikeouts on the mound.
Cameron Massman also threw a strikeout.
Lincoln and Washburn will return to LU Baseball Field on Saturday (April 23) for a 1:00 p.m. CDT contest. The Blue Tiger Athletics Club will be on hand to host a tailgate party, sponsored by Jack Markway, in the parking lot.
