JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Lincoln baseball team racked up 12 hits, but fell to Nebraska-Kearney, 16-5, in the second game of a three-game series on Saturday (Feb. 27).
Kaleb Davis,
Mike Million and
Kolton Clark each had two hits apiece for LU while
Dillon Walker,
Jameson Mahan,
Mason Price,
Jackson Walker,
Alex Ludwick and
Nick Lovell all had one each. Million additionally had two RBI while Clark and Davis each stole two bases.
Nebraska-Kearney (3-6, 2-0 MIAA) plated two runs in both the first and second frames to take a 4-0 lead, but Lincoln (1-9, 0-2 MIAA) shut the Lopers out in the third and fourth frames. In the top of the fifth inning, UNK used a three-run homer to increase its advantage to 7-0.
The Blue Tigers mounted a rally in the bottom of the fifth, as
Zach Anderson reached on a walk and Lovell and Clark both singled. Clark's hit drove in Anderson, and then
Dillon Walker drove in Clark with a base hit. Later in the frame, a pair of singles by Price and
Jackson Walker, followed by a walk issued to Davis, loaded the bases. Million then brought in two more scores with a base hit, closing the gap to 7-4.
The Lopers were able to get three runs back in the sixth inning and another in the seventh before Lincoln got back on the board. Million hit a double and then scored on a base hit from Ludwick, pulling the Blue Tigers to within 11-5. UNK added a run in the eighth, however, and closed the game with a four-run ninth inning to win the contest.
Davis led LU defensively with 11 putouts.
Dillon Walker was next with five and Million and Ludwick each had three.
Dillon Walker tied Lovell for the team-high with five assists.
Trevor Schnieders,
Kyler Lundgrin and
Daniel Castillo each struck out batters on the mound.
The Blue Tigers will return to LU Baseball Field on Sunday (Feb. 28) to close their MIAA-opening three-game series with the Lopers. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CST.
