QUINCY, Ill. - The Lincoln women's basketball team mounted a furious fourth quarter rally, but it came up three points short as Quincy held off the Blue Tigers, 73-70, on Wednesday evening (Nov. 23).
Quincy (1-4) got off to a hot start, out-scoring the Blue Tigers, 21-4, in the first quarter. Lincoln (1-4) responded well, however, holding a 24-23 advantage in scoring in the second quarter and tying the Hawks with 18 points in the third.
In the fourth quarter,
Citlali Lopez opened the scoring with a three, and
Erica Gibbons followed up with a jumper. After Quincy answered with a layup,
Azaria Nave hit a pair of free throws that launched LU on a 17-5 run that pulled the Blue Tigers to within 69-68 of the Hawks with just under three minutes remaining.
The Hawks built a three-point cushion with a jumper, but
Shamirah Johnson hit a layup to pull LU back within on with a minute remaining. After a defensive stop, Nave tried to give LU its first lead of the day with a layup, but it was no good and Quincy grabbed the rebound. Lincoln was forced to foul, and the Hawks made a pair of shots at the charity stripe to re-take a three-point advantage. Nave have a shot to tie the game, but a three-point attempt was no good, and Quincy escaped with the victory.
Five Blue Tigers scored in double figures, with Nave and Johnson each scoring 14 points. Nave also dished five assists, recorded two steals and grabbed three boards. Johnson, meanwhile, tallied three assists and a pair of rebounds. Gibbons and
Tyler Brown-Henderson both finished with 11 points, with Brown-Henderson grabbing 10 rebounds. Gibbons, meanwhile, had a pair of blocks.
Hunter Yoakum scored 12 points to go with four boards, a block, a steal and an assist. Lopez scored six points and dished four assists while
Kailey Foster rounded out the scoring with two points.
Tempary Gunter provided three rebounds, a block and a steal to the Lincoln cause.
The Blue Tigers will next be in action on Dec. 1, when Lincoln plays an exhibition game at NCAA Division I Nebraska-Omaha at 7:00 p.m. CST.
