KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Lincoln women's basketball team had the lead at halftime, but Rockhurst used a big third quarter to pull away for an 86-64 win over the Blue Tigers in the season opener for both teams on Saturday evening (Nov. 12).
Azaria Nave led the Blue Tigers with 27 points on 10-for-16 shooting, including making four of her five attempts from three-point range. Nave also finished with a team-high five rebounds as well as two assists and a steal.
Hunter Yoakum added 21 points, three rebounds and three steals.
Nave opened the game by making a three-pointer, and Rockhurst (1-0) tied it with an old-fashioned three-point play. That ended up being how most of the first quarter went, with each team answering the others' shots en route to a 20-19 score in favor of the Hawks after the first 10 minutes. Yoakum gave Lincoln (0-1) an early lead in the second quarter on a pair of free throws, and the Blue Tigers ended up going into the break with a 36-35 advantage.
Tyler Brown-Henderson made a layup to open the third quarter, but Rockhurst responded with a 22-6 run to take control of the contest. The Hawks led, 61-45, through three quarters, and finished with a 25-19 advantage during the fourth to earn the win. After shooting over 50-percent (.520) in the first half, the Blue Tigers were limited to just .300 shooting from the floor in the third and fourth quarters combined.
Erica Gibbons scored eight points for the Blue Tigers while Brown-Henderson and
Shamirah Johnson each scored three and
Kailey Foster rounded out the scoring with two points. Foster also pulled down four rebounds while Johnson and Gibbons each finished with three rebounds and a steal.
Tempary Gunter added two rebounds while
Citlali Lopez had one and dished two assists.
Lincoln will next be in action on Wednesday (Nov. 16), when the Blue Tigers travel to Rolla, Mo. to play Missouri S&T at 5:30 p.m. CST.
