JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -
Hunter Mitchell hit a two-run homer, but the Lincoln baseball team dropped an 11-5 decision to Missouri S&T on Thursday evening (April 30).
The Blue Tigers finished with a 9-6 advantage in total hits, but the Miners capitalized on multiple LU miscues to rally during the middle innings for the win. Mitchell's homer, which also plated
Easton Stuckenschneider, came in the bottom of the first inning, and the Blue Tigers would remain ahead 2-0 entering the top of the fourth.
A balk allowed the Miners to score their first run of the game in the fourth inning, and Missouri S&T (30-15, 23-6 GLVC) scored five more times in the fifth to take the lead for good. Lincoln (6-39, 0-29 GLVC) nearly came back and tied the game in the bottom half of the fifth, as Mitchell hit a bases-clearing double that plated Stuckenschneider,
Ryan Lepper and
Daren Walters-Ansell to cut the Miner lead to 6-5.
Canon Feist started the game on the mound and fanned three Miner batters.
Carter Otto notched a strikeout as LU's first reliever, and
Kooper Houvouras struck out two in a closing role. Mitchell led LU with 11 putouts and tied
Andy Srebroski IV for the team-lead in hits with two apiece. Lepper, Walters-Ansell, Stuckenschneider,
Tim Fleming and
Nolan Laughlin also had a hit in Thursday's contest. Walters-Ansell and
Blythe Blakey each turned three assists.
Lincoln continues its series against Missouri S&T on Friday (May 1) with a 12:00 p.m. CDT double-header.
