Blue Tigers Shut Out Upper Iowa, 6-0

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Lincoln softball team held a 10-2 advantage in hitting as the Blue Tigers shut out Upper Iowa, 6-0, in the first game of a double-header on Sunday (April 19). The Peacocks got revenge in game two, scoring a seventh inning run to win, 2-1.

In the first game, Gracie Wright hit a double before scoring on a single through the middle by Kierra O'Rourke for LU's first run of the day. TK Lawson then gave the Blue Tigers a 3-0 lead with a home run that plated O'Rourke. These three runs came in the first inning, and LU tacked on a fourth in the second when Ann-Marie Simpson scored on a single from Wright.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Faith Jaegers hit a double, and then came home on a single from Josie Bezzole. After stealing third base, Bezzole scored LU's final run on a ground out by Simpson. Wright and O'Rourke each had two hits for Lincoln (19-20, 5-15 GLVC) while Lawson, Jaegers, Bezzole, Simpson, Reese Smith and Hannah Heisler each had one.

Mallorey Rogers got the win after pitching the complete game and striking out six Peacock batters. Josie Stewart led the LU defense with seven putouts and Wright ended the game with five assists.

Upper Iowa (6-36, 1-17 GLVC) got on the board first in the second game, scoring on an RBI double in the top of the second inning. Lincoln tied the game in the bottom of the third when Simpson scored on a single from Wright. Simpson initially reached on an infield single before stealing second base.

The Blue Tigers nearly took the lead in the sixth inning on a double from O'Rourke, but Wright was just barely thrown out at home to keep the game tied. In the seventh inning, Upper Iowa loaded the bases before scoring the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the seventh, Heisler hit a double and eventually reached third base, but a diving catch in right field for the final out allowed the Peacocks to escape with the victory.

Simpson and Wright both had two hits and Bezzole finished with one. Abby Pulliam recorded a strikeout and Stewart finished with a team-high seven putouts. Ella Percival added three assists.

Next Saturday (April 25), Lincoln will travel to Quincy, Ill. to play Quincy in a 12:00 p.m. CDT double-header.
