JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Lincoln baseball team scored 13 runs on seven hits, but William Jewell held off the Blue Tigers, 24-13, on Tuesday afternoon (April 14).
The Blue Tigers got off to a fast start, as
Tim Fleming brought home
Felix Marquez on a sacrifice fly for LU's first run and
Andy Srebroski IV scored on a single from
Blythe Blakey to give Lincoln an early 2-1 lead.
Jayden Little then hit a three-run homer that plated Blakey and
Easton Stuckenschneider to give the Blue Tigers a 5-1 advantage at the end of the first inning.
William Jewell (8-29) didn't take long to respond, however, as the Cardinals took advantage of seven hits in the top of the second to score seven runs and take an 8-5 lead. Lincoln (6-29) didn't get back on the board until the third inning, when Fleming scored LU's sixth run when
Daren Walters-Ansell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Later in the third, a ground out from
Ty Ollison allowed Blakey to score.
The score was 11-7 in favor of WJC entering the sixth inning, and the Cardinals scored six times in that frames to take control of the ballgame. The Cardinals tacked on three more insurance runs in the top of the seventh, but Lincoln answered with six runs of its own in the bottom of that frame. Blakey led the inning off with a double,
Diego Silva was hit by a pitch and Walters-Ansell was issued a walk to load the bases. Ollison was hit by a pitch to bring in Blakey and
Nate Lucas reached base on balls to bring home Silva. That brought up Marquez, who hit a bases-clearing double to score three more runs for the Blue Tigers. A base hit from Stuckenschneider allowed Marquez to come home for Lincoln's 13th run of the afternoon.
Jacob Claborn,
Canon Feist,
Blake Holtmeyer and
Kris Haley each rang up a strikeout on the mound for the Blue Tigers. Fleming led Lincoln with six putouts and Ollison and Srebroski each recorded five while
Jacob Schulte and Little were both responsible for three. Walters-Ansell and Blakey had three assists apiece and
Carter Otto and Claborn each finished with one.
Lincoln is on the road this weekend to play McKendree in Lebanon, Ill. The Blue Tigers and the Bearcats meet for a single game on Friday (April 17) at 2:00 p.m. CDT; play a double-header on Saturday (April 18) at 12:00 p.m. CDT; and play one more nine-inning contest on Sunday (April 19) at 12:00 p.m. CDT.
