INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Lincoln softball team played Indianapolis, the No. 7 team in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II poll, tough in the first game of a double-header on Sunday (April 12), but the Greyhounds prevailed, 10-3, thanks to some late runs. Indianapolis also won the second game of the day, 9-0.
The difference for most of the first contest was a five-run second inning by the Greyhounds, but the Blue Tigers cut into that lead in the top of the third when
Ella Percival hit a solo home run. Indianapolis (43-3, 17-1 GLVC) put two more runs on the board in the bottom half of that frame, but, in the fourth inning,
Josie Stewart drove in
Gracie Wright on an outfield single before scoring on base hit from
Reese Smith.
Lincoln (17-18, 3-13 GLVC) remained within four runs of the GLVC-leading Greyhounds until the fifth inning, when a ground out RBI pushed the lead to 8-3. Indianapolis later hit a two-run homer in the sixth.
Mallorey Rogers notched four strikeouts as LU's starter in the circle while
Jaedin Blankenship fanned two Greyhound batters. Wright led Lincoln offensively with two hits and Stewart and
Faith Jaegers were LU's defensive leaders with six putouts apiece. Percival supplied three assists.
In the second game, Indianapolis scored one run in each of the first two innings before taking control of the contest with five scores in the third.
Abi Jorgensen went 2-for-3 at the plate for LU while
Abrea Simmons and
Joss Marriott both struck out batters. Jorgensen additionally led LU with five putouts.
Lincoln will return to the friendly confines of LU Softball Field to host Lewis in a double-header next Saturday (April 18). First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CDT.
