Hawks Rally to Beat Blue Tigers, 24-21

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Lincoln football team scored three touchdowns, but a score early in the fourth quarter allowed Quincy to win, 24-21, in the GLVC opener for both teams on Saturday night (Sept. 20).

Quincy (2-1, 1-0 GLVC) scored twice in the opening quarter to take a 14-0 lead, but Lincoln (2-1, 0-1 GLVC) rallied in the second. The Hawks fumbled at their own 41 and Donte Moore jumped on the ball to set the Lincoln offense up in Quincy territory. Back-to-back runs by Jareese Howard for 16 yards and an 11-yard scamper by Isaiah Tate helped Lincoln get the ball down to the six. JaDarrius Thomas capped off the drive from there, taking the ball in from six yards out to cut the QU lead in half.

The Lincoln defense forced a three-and-out on the next drive, and the Blue Tigers took over once again on Quincy's side of the field thanks to a 42-yard punt return by Jaden Holloway. LU took over at the 18-yard line, and, on the first play of the drive, Howard swept to the left and outran the defense to tie the contest at 14.

The Hawks entered halftime with the lead on a 43-yard field goal as time expired, but the Blue Tigers kept Quincy off the board during the third quarter. About midway through the half, Dontonio Moore blocked a punt to give Lincoln the ball at its own 38. On the ensuing possession, Howard gained 32 yards, and Tate eventually capped the drive off with a 15-yard run that gave the Blue Tigers their first lead of the game, 21-17.

The Hawks took the lead back with a 15-yard run of their own two plays into the final period, however, and the Blue Tigers were kept off the board the rest of the way. With just under four minutes remaining, Jacob McGhee stuffed the Hawks on a fourth down play from the Lincoln 24, giving the Blue Tigers a final opportunity to tie the game or take the lead. Howard began the drive with a seven-yard carry, but the Hawks later broke up a fourth down pass and ran the remainder of the clock off the board.

Howard finished with 73 yards, Thomas gained 30 and Tate finished with 29. Tate completed nine passes for 122 yards and Holloway had six receptions for 58 yards. Marcus Harris gained 43 yards on his only catch of the evening. Including four returns, Holloway had 156 all-purpose yards on the night.

Nate Harden led the LU defense with 10 tackles, Jordan Hoskins finished with eight and Renard Willis added seven. Devayne Johnson supplied 2.5 tackles for loss and had one of LU's three sacks. Donte Moore had one sack and Dontonio Moore and J'Addison Brown combined on the other. Hollingsworth and Michael Allen also had seven tackles apiece.

Lincoln is on the road next Saturday (Sept. 27), traveling to Fayette, Iowa to play Upper Iowa at 1:00 p.m. CDT.
