Blue Tigers Hold Off Lewis, Advance to GLVC Semifinals

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Four members of the Lincoln men's basketball team scored in double figures as the Blue Tigers held off a second half comeback by Lewis to win, 62-59, in the quarterfinals of the GLVC Championship on Friday (March 7).

Tyler Chapman scored 20 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished an assist. He also had one steal, and it was critical, as, with just under five seconds to play and Lincoln clinging to a one-point lead, Chapman took the ball away from the Flyers before they could attempt a shot. Chapman was quickly fouled and he made both shots at the line, part of a 13-for-13 afternoon at the charity stripe for the Blue Tigers. Lewis heaved a three-point shot as time expired, but it bounced off the backboard, sealing the Blue Tiger victory.

Andreas Fuller scored 13 points in the first half and finished with 19 points, two steals and a team-high nine rebounds. Lewis (17-11) finished with a slim 36-34 advantage on the glass and shot .415 from the field while the Blue Tigers shot .362. Lincoln (21-8) forced 10 turnovers and converted those takeaways into 16 points.

Lincoln led for nearly the entire game, taking a 4-2 lead on a layup by Fuller with 17:47 left in the first half and holding on the rest of the way. The Blue Tigers went into halftime ahead 36-28 and led by 15 with 17:28 remaining in regulation. The Flyers answered with a 16-2 run to pull within 45-44, but Fuller made a pair of free throws and Malcolm Davis hit a layup to stop the run and put Lincoln back on top by five.

Mikey West made a pair of shots at the line to later give Lincoln a 57-50 lead, but back-to-back jumpers brought Lewis back within one. With 1:39 remaining, Davis drained a corner three to give Lincoln a four-point cushion, but Lewis once again had an answer, hitting a trey with 45 ticks left on the clock. The Blue Tigers were called for a travel on the ensuing possession, but Lincoln kept Lewis from having a good look at the basket, and Chapman stole the ball to all but seal the victory.

Davis had 10 points and a rebound while Franck Yetna finished with 11 points, six boards, an assist, a steal and a block. West led Lincoln with four assists and pulled down four rebounds to go with a steal. Matthieu Biembongo grabbed five rebounds and Max Ekono ended the day with three boards and a takeaway. Tyson Robinson rounded out the Blue Tigers with two assists and a rebound.

Lincoln advances to the semifinals of the GLVC Championship and will play Missouri S&T in Hyland Arena on the campus of Lindenwood University on Saturday (March 8) at 12:00 p.m. CST.
