Blue Tigers Beat UMSL, 4-1, for First GLVC Victory

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Lincoln softball team picked up its first conference win as a member of the GLVC on Saturday (March 15), beating Missouri-St. Louis, 4-1, at LU Softball Field. The win came in the second game of a double-header, as the Triton took the first contest, 3-2.

Lindsey Brant scored on a base hit by Torri Hinnah in the bottom of the second while Hinnah reached the plate on a hit by Emily Thompson, giving LU an early 2-0 lead in game two. Missouri-St. Louis (8-11, 1-5 GLVC) cut its deficit in half in the top of the third by bringing in a run on double play. In the bottom half of the third, however, Ann-Marie Simpson stole home to restore the Blue Tigers' two-run advantage.

Hinnah hit a triple for Lincoln (10-14, 1-5 GLVC) in the fourth inning and Thompson followed with a double to make the score 4-1. Mallorey Rogers got the win in the circle in a complete-game effort in which she allowed only four hits.

Both Hinnah and Thompson had two hits while Simpson, Brandt, Abbi Conrad, Maris Ollison and Addie Lang each had one apiece. Hinnah recorded 14 putouts while Simpson finished with three and Brandt tallied two. Lang led Lincoln with six assists and Conrad finished with four.

Lincoln also scored first in Saturday's opener, as Ollison drove in Simpson on a fielder's choice. The lead held into the top of the third, when UMSL tied the game on an error. In the bottom of the fourth, the Blue Tigers brought in another run when Conrad scored on a double hit by Brandt.

The Tritons answered that score in the top of the fifth, tying the game at two on an RBI double of their own. The game remained deadlocked until the top of the seventh, when UMSL opened the frame with a home run. UMSL kept LU off the board in the bottom of the frame to escape with the one-run win.

Abby Pulliam struck out three batters and Conrad and Brandt each had hits. Hinnah posted a team-high 10 putouts while Faith Jaegers and Gabby Newman each finished with four. Newman also tallied three assists while Ollison was credited with two.

The Blue Tigers travel to Lebanon, Ill. next Saturday (March 22) to play McKendree in a 12:00 p.m. CDT double-header.
